Nation of the Lambent Flame is a main quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Nation of the Lambent Flame main mission.
- Starting Location: Bakbattahl
- Quest Giver: Captain Brant
- Requirement: having completed A Feast of Deception
- Reward: Battahl Residence Permit
- Quest Description: The false Arisen displayed the power to control pawns at the coronation – a power Bran believes to be derived from the godsway. Make for Battahl and learn more of this artifact.
Objectives:
- Journey to Battahl
- Make for the Rockmouse’s Burrow
Starting Location: Nation of the Lambent Flame
The quest starts automatically in Vernworth after Feast of Deception. Captain Brant will send you on the way to the game’s second region “Battahl”.
NOTE: Now is the best opportunity to do the missable side quest Every Rose Has Its Thorn. It’s needed to romance Wilhelmina but not needed for trophies/achievements.
Journey to Battahl
Note: The enemies in Battahl Region are resistant to fire and weak to ice. If you play a class that has any ice magic be sure to equip this from the Vernworth Guild before going on this lengthy adventure.
The quest marker is far away, southwest of Vernworth. To get there we must first reach Checkpoint Rest Town to the far west of Vernworth. You can interact with the Oxcart Station at the northwest exit of Vernworth city and pay the driver 200 gold, then sit in the oxcart and doze off to have him drive you – but you might get attack along the way and must walk to rest of the way. Or you can walk there from the get-go. It’s a long walk but you can run past most enemies. Just stick to the main roads, you can see the gray outlines of the roads when you zoom in on the fogged map.
Here is where you must go and the path to take – Checkpoint Rest Town:
Once there, you can do a few side quests in Checkpoint Rest Town, it’s a good opportunity to level up before you venture into the more difficult Battahl region:
- The Sorcerer’s Appraisal (Available: While doing Main Quests in Vernworth)
- Hunt for the Jadeite Orb (Available: after Seat of the Sovran)
- Prey for the Pack (Available: upon reaching Checkpoint Rest Town)
- Mercy among Thieves (Available: After crossing the border into Battahl)
In the south of Checkpoint Rest Town you find a big gate – this is the border.
There are at least 3 ways to get past the border. The game doesn’t specify a method and wants you to figure it out yourself, which is the tricky part of this quest, at least if you’re playing as a human character. The permit Captain Brant gave you is only valid for Beastren characters, so the border guard won’t accept it if you are a human. If you are a Beastren you can simply show the permit as is. This is also the place where you can earn I’m In for crossing the border by illicit means, which requires climbing in the back of a carriage and driving through the gate inside the carriage (the other methods won’t unlock the trophy).
Before venturing into Battahl, it’s highly recommended to use the Riftstone in Checkpoint Rest Town to recruit the strongest pawns possible. If your friends have higher level pawns recruit those, otherwise spend your Rift Points on the strongest Fighter/Mage pawns (2 Fighters + 2 Mages are a good combo). It’s recommended being level 25 for the next section.
Crossing the Border
Border Crossing Method #1 (recommended) – I’m In, use Carriage:
For trophy purposes, put “Beastren Border Entry Permit” into storage at the inn in Checkpoint Rest Town (if you have it in your inventory the trophy might not unlock). You must wait for a royal carriage to pass through, the border guard always opens the gate for it and you can climb in the back and drive through unnoticed. The carriage always comes in the afternoon. To get it to spawn, interact with the Oxcart Station sign at the entrace of Checkpoint Rest Town to “Await Oxcart”.
Now head to the bench across from the Oxcart Station and rest there one time. This will advance the time to when the carriage comes (the carriage is NOT the oxcart).
The carriage should now spawn on the path just outside Checkpoint Rest Town. It looks different from the Oxcarts, it’s a proper royal carriage with an enclosed seating area in the back and a roof on it, not like the cheap Oxcarts you use for fast travel. If it doesn’t spawn, rest at the station and then the bench again and check the road outside town again, see location below. Get in and let it drive through the border gate, takes about 4 minutes. The trophy pops shortly after driving past the gate. Alternatively, you can just wait in front of the border gate during the afternoon until the carriage eventually passes through there, it always comes at the same time of day.
Border Crossing Method #2 – Buy Beastren Mask (if you’re human) and present the Beastren Border Entry Permit:
In Checkpoint Rest Town go to Ibrahim’s Scrap Store and buy the “Beastren Mask” for 8700G. Then equip it and show the permit to the border guard and he’ll let you pass.
Border Crossing Method #3 – Take the River Path:
You can also go through the river path to the west of Checkpoint Rest Town. When you zoom in on the world map you will see the gray outline of the road at the end of the river. However, this is the long way around and not the easiest path to take. The more direct path is preferable.
Path from Checkpoint Rest Town to Bakbattahl City
After passing the border you reach the game’s second region: Battahl. It’s a desert area. The enemies here are resistant to fire and weak to ice. They are also much stronger, but also give much more XP/DEP.
Stick mostly to the main paths on the way to the quest marker. Below is the recommended path:
It’s best to defeat each group of enemies along the way. It’s a slow process but if you try to run past everyone you and your pawns will get stabbed in the back and someone will die. If you lose your pawns along the way you’re just making it harder on yourself. Also the game won’t save while being chased by enemies and they follow you for a long distance. So if you die you’d start much further back. Killing the enemies will get you a lot of XP and the level-ups will improve your survivability going forward. The strong miniboss enemies you can skip however. Use campfires along the way to recharge health.
Make for the Rockmouse’s Burrow
When you reach the quest marker area, you will be at the entrance of Bakbattahl City, the game’s second capital city. Enter the inn outside the city, called “Rockmouse’s Burrow”. Talk to Menella there, she will grant you the Battahl Residence Permit. This lets you cross back through the gate in Checkpoint Rest Town, and showing it to the border guard will open the gate without wearing the Beastren Mask.
This finishes Nation of the Lambent Flame main quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
You can now proceed to explore Bakbattahl City. There’s no Portcrystal in this city, therefore you should place the portable Portcrystal you got as a main request reward earlier. A good place to put it is in front of the Bakbattahl Vocation Guild. Also check out the vendors, they sell much better weapons/armor than the ones in Vernworth, but it’s expensive. Try to get the best weapon for your main character and an armor if you can afford it. You can sell stuff from your chest you no longer need.
For all other Quests refer to Dragon’s Dogma 2 Walkthrough.

There is another path east of Putrid Cave. Guerco Mountain Road. It’s little bit easier, just got to get pass a Drake, and some choppers.
