Dragon’s Dogma 2 contains 10 vocations (character classes). 4 are available from the start, the remaining 6 are unlocked from story progress and side quests. This guide explains how to unlock them all and what each vocation does.
You can change your vocation and that of your main pawn at any time. This can be done at the Inn in Melve or at the Guild Halls in Vernworth/Bakbattahl. Refer to How to Change Vocations.
You rank up your vocations by defeating enemies. This gives you experience called “DEP” which can be redeemed at the guild halls to unlock new skills and other vocations. Each new rank unlocks more skills. Rank 9 is the maximum for each vocation. Upon unlocking a new vocation you will automatically be given its starter set. Every weapon/armor piece is only usable by certain vocations. If you don’t want to continue with a vocation, put the equipment in your storage. The storage is accessible from various inns, usually at least one inn keeper per town lets you access your storage (the storage contents are shared worldwide between all inns). Then you don’t have to carry so much gear with you which leaves you with more inventory space. If you want to continue with a vocation you can always redeem the gear later from storage.
The recommended starting class is the Mage. It deals the most damage, can be played from a safe distance, has healing spells, and a defensive spell “Palladium” which blocks all incoming damage. Make your main pawn a Fighter with “Calm” Inclination, this will act as a tank to defend you. Dump all heavy inventory items on your main pawn, the lower your inventory weight the faster you can run.

Mystic Spearhand
- Unlock Requirement: The “Mystic Spearhand” vocation is unlocked automatically from the story, during Main Quest: A New Godsway. Another opportunity is to unlock it from Side Quest: Readvent of Calamity where Sigurd will appear to fight a dragon alongside you. You can also get it anywhere else by talking to Sigurd, an NPC found at various dragon locations. For example, he can show up at Dragonsbreath Tower south-west of Bakbatthal (for me he spawned there during Main Quest: A New Godsway, next to the campfire). But even if you ignore him you’ll get it while slaying the dragons for story objectives so can’t miss it. Below is the location of Siguard at Dragonsbreath Tower during Main Quest: A New Godsway.
- Equippable Weapons: Duospears
- Combat Style: Only the Arisen can excel at this vocation, a melding of magick and physicality. Their ceaseless attacks leave no room to counter, taking down foes in moments.
Magick Archer
- Unlock Requirement: Reward from completing Side Quest Put a Spring in Thy Step.
- Equippable Weapons: Magickal Bows
- Combat Style: Only the Arisen can excel at this vocation, combining the best of ranged attacks to vanquish multiple enemies from afar with unparalleled tactical flexibility.
Trickster
- Unlock Requirement: The “Trickster” vocation is unlocked automatically from the story, during Main Quest: Flickering Shadows, after completing the objectives to speak with the Dragonforged and the Oracle. You can then change to this vocation at any Guild Hall, for example in Bakbattahl or Vernworth. You can also get it outside of this main quest by talking to the Oracle at any time, found at Battahl > Reverent Shrine (see map below, in the northeast of the desert region south of the border).
- Equippable Weapons: Censers
- Combat Style: Only the Arisen can excel at this vocation, wielding phantasms to confuse foes. They call forth obstacles and illusions to sow chaos on the battlefield.
Warfarer
- Unlock Requirement: Reward from completing Side Quest The Sotted Sage.
- Equippable Weapons: All
- Combat Style: A vocation suited to the Arisen, master of a variety of weapons. The ability to quickly change equipment allows them to adopt a highly flexible fighting style.

The Trickster can be unlocked by just talking to the oracle. You don’t need the main quest for that. I stumbled upon her by exploring and unlocked the Trickster long before I had the main quest to talk to her.

Thanks, that makes sense. Then talking to her is the actual requirement. I just happened to talk to her when the story forces you to. Updated that 🙂

You can also unlock the Mystic Spearhand class in Harve village. You can find Sigurd in Coastal Hut. But I didn`t notice when exatly he spawn there. Maybe after proceedig Ulrika’s quests.
