Every Rose Has Its Thorn is a side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Every Rose Has Its Thorn side mission.
- Starting Location: Vernworth > Noble Quarter > Rose Chateau Bordelrie
- Quest Giver: Wilhelmina
- Requirement: Finished Feast of Deception main quest. The side quest is missable and becomes unavailable after too much time has passed! It’s recommended to do it immediately when you start Nation of the Lambent Flame main quest.
- Reward: 1200 XP, 8500 G, Ring of Benevolence, Wilhelmina Romantic Relationship
- Quest Description: Wilhelmina has granted you three days to gather evidence of Allard’s crimes
Objectives:
- Gather Evidence of Allard’s Crimes
- Talk to Captain Brant
- Deliver the evidence to Wilhelmina
- Escape the Rose Chateau
- Talk to Wilhelmina
Starting Location: Every Rose Has Its Thorn
This is the most convoluted quest in the game to start. There are very specific steps needed to trigger it:
Step 1 (Optional): In preparation you should do A Place to Call Home side quest to buy the house in Vernworth for 20,000 Gold – this isn’t needed to start the quest but will get you a love letter from Wilhelmina later in the quest
Step 2: Immediately after finishing Feast of Deception main quest (after you went to the coronation), go to the Rose Chateau in the Noble Quarter of Vernworth. Upstairs you will find Wilhelmina, the woman you met during The Stolen Throne & An Unsettling Encounter. You have to raise her affinity to maximum to be able to start the quest. To do this, open the chest to her left (same room) to get “Bunch of Flowers”. Talk to Wilhelmina and press SQUARE (PS5) / X (Xbox) to gift her the Bunch of Flowers. Exhaust all dialogues with her until she repeats the same line of dialogue. If the gift option is grayed out you already reached maximum affinity with her and can advance to the next step.
Step 3: You must now leave Vernworth and rest for 3 days. What I did was to use the Oxcart Station in the northwest of Vernworth, wait for the Oxcart, sit on the bench in the back of the Oxcart, pay the driver 200 Gold, press TRIANGLE/Y to doze off. He will bring you to Checkpoint Rest Town (if you get ambushed you must walk the rest of the way). Rest there on a bench for 3 days, then take the Oxcart back to Vernworth. Resting in Vernworth for 3 days doesn’t seem to work for some players, but resting outside of Vernworth is guaranteed to work. You can also rest in other towns at benches or at campfires in the wild, just make sure you get out of Vernworth.
Step 4: Return to Wilhelmina at night. She should now be gone from here room and there should now be a guy called “Rolf” standing to the right of her room in front of a locked door. He will tell you “My sincerest apologies. Lady Wilhelmina is attending to a patron at present”. If he’s there you did the steps correctly and can proceed with the next step. If he’s not there you either haven’t maxed Wilhelima’s affinity (try giving her more gifts until the gift option is grayed out) or you didn’t rest for long enough outside town (try resting a few more times till night).
Step 5: Step Enter Wilhelima’s room. In the right corner of her room interact with the painting to look through the peephole in the wall. This will start a secret cutscene. You can only interact with the painting if Rolf is standing in front of the locked door and Wilhelmina left her room (should be night for this). If you are doing this too late in the game or haven’t maxed the affinity with Wilhelmina it won’t be possible.
Step 6: After the cutscene Wilhelmina will automatically talk to you, tell her “Offer Your Assistance”. She now tasks you with finding 3 pieces of evidence within 3 days.
You must complete the remaining quest steps within 3 in-game days. This is highly missable, don’t let too much time pass!
If you are already much further into the game and aren’t getting Step 4 & 5 to trigger, it means too much time passed and the quest has become unavailable. If that’s the case you can retry it in New Game+ immediately when starting main quest Nation of the Lambent Flame.
Gather Evidence of Allard’s Crimes
You need to find 2 pieces of evidence.
Evidence #1: Murder Report
Go to Vernworth Castle and talk to Sven at night. He’s usually found upstairs (2F) in the room called “Sven’s Chambers” on the map. It’s the room in the northwest corner. You can enter the castle through the Guardhouse which is in the southwest corner. The main entrances will be locked at night. Talk to Sven a couple times to exhaust all dialogues, he might give you another quest A Veil of Gossamer Clouds if you haven’t accepted it yet, but you don’t need to do that quest right now. Just keep talking to him until he tells you to talk to Patrick.
Go to Patrick’s Estate in the northwest of Noble Quarter. Talk to Patrick inside, he’s usually on the ground floor at night. He tells you that Allard concealed the evidence behind a painting in his manor. He will offer to invite Allard over to his house to lure him away, click “Accept”. This step is important or else Allard and his guard will always attack you when entering his manor.
If you did everything correctly thus far, you should now have a yellow search area over Allard’s Estate if you’re tracking the quest.
Go to Allard’s Estate at night, it’s the next building northwest of the Rose Chateau. Enter the first room upstairs and interact with the frame on the left wall. It will drop the Murder Report, pick it up. Make sure Allard and his guard aren’t in the room anymore – if they are, don’t go in all the way or they’ll attack you. In this case you’ll want to rest until the next night until Patrick has lured him over to his house. DON’T kill Allard in his home, it would mess up the quest progression because you need him alive later after turning in all evidence.
Evidence #2: Bribery Investigation Findings
Found in a house in the north of Vernworth, on the table in front of you when you enter. It’s the next house south from Clovis’s Barberie. If this doesn’t spawn, try talking to Captain Brant in Stardrop Inn at night but DON’T give him the Murder Report yet (in the delivery screen quit out).
Talk to Captain Brant
After gathering both pieces of evidence go to Stardropp Inn at night and talk to Captain Brant. If it’s not night you can rest on a bench or talk to the bartender to skip time. Pick the dialogue “Tell me of the Myrmecoleon”.
Make sure you give him the “Bribery Investigation Findings” first. Then select “Search for more evidence”. Now give him the other piece of evidence “Murder Report”. Then select “I’ll have any aid you can give”. This is important so that Brant helps you later to escape the guards.
Deliver the evidence to Wilhelmina
Return to Wilhelmina in the Rose Chateau. She should be upstairs on the balcony. Give her the evidence “Murder Report”. Click “deliver” and then choose “Continue offering your aid”.
Now you must follow Wilhelmina out of her room. She will direct you to the room to the left (the one you watched through the peephole). Enter that room to find Allard. He must be alive, if you killed him in his house you need to revive him at the charnel house using a wakestone. After the dialogue with Allard, grab him with R2/RT.
Escape the Rose Chateau
Wilhelmina will kill Allard. Afterward you must flee the room. You can jump out the window. Captain Brant should automatically talk to you here if you made all decisions as described. Follow him until he stops and talks to you, this should happen near the Grand Riftstone of Vernworth.
Talk to Wilhelmina
If you bought your own house for 20,000 Gold in side quest A Place to Call Home, you will find a letter hanging at the door of your house (if it’s not there, rest on bench). The letter is from Wilhelmina and she’s invited you to visit her. Rest 1 day, then return to Wilhelmina in Rose Chateau. Upon speaking with her, you will get the romance cutscene where you sleep with her.
This finishes Every Rose Has Its Thorn side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

I successfully triggered this quest after I started Main Quest 14: A New Godsway and long after it can be triggered (30+ hours). Just give Wilhelmina the flower and rest outside Vernworth should be fine.
PowerPyx says
I had specifically tested that and for me it was no longer doable in Main Quest 14: A New Godsway.
It might be after a set amount of days that the quest goes away, or it’s just prone to bugging out. The only way I could get it to trigger was in a New Game and doing it immediately after the quest became available.

Wilhelmina was taken by guards
John says
When I tried talking to Wilhelmina, she would repeat some lines about oxcarts and there was no option to give her a gift, so I thought her affinity was maxed, but nothing changed even after waiting for a week. I went and finished the Phantom Oxcart quest, and she changed her lines to the one about leaving, and I could again give her gifts. 2 bunches of flowers and things proceeded like you said. I think the Phantom Oxcart quest stalls this one until it is completed.

Sven disappeared for me. Solution: go to Allards house, upstairs, allard’s guard has a great big sword that will knock you over with one swing and then they will arrest you, so be careful
The painting is a portrait, the evidence will drop down in an animation so it may take some fiddling and dodging. Telling your pawns “to me” as you flee or “Wait” will stop them from fighting.
Some data because I’m not sure why he is missing.
I have commencement or some main quest, and already did the veil of gossamer clouds. I have active the second quest involving queen Nadinia and delivering a letter to a guy in an encampent in the deep south.
