This chapter begins after completing Partners.
100% Flowchart
Checkpoint: Dinner’s Ready
- Wait on Todd & Alice: Unmissable. After serving them food at the dining table, wait and watch the cutscene.
Checkpoint: Todd Gets Mad
Becoming Deviant or not:
Todd will get mad and order Kara to stand still, while Alice ran upstairs. Now there will be three different branches:
- Kara fails to become deviant: Simply stand still and do nothing. Todd will go upstairs and kills Alice and Kara after this. This is a short and bad outcome for this level.
- Kara is too slow: become deviant by holding
and mashing
, but don’t go upstairs, don’t talk to Todd and don’t stand in his path when he goes up. Walk to the kitchen instead and do nothing until the final cutscene starts.
- Break Programming / Kara becomes deviant: hold
and mash
to be able to move and chose between the two general paths/branches for this level:
- Go upstairs: Don’t choose to talk to Todd, but head upstairs straight away to protect Alice from him.
- Reason with Todd / Todd shoves Kara downstairs: Choose to talk to Todd instead of going upstairs. He will always smack you to the ground and be upstairs before you can be there.
- Kara stands in Todd’s way: become deviant, but don’t go upstairs or talk to Todd. Wait for him to go to the stairs with his belt in his hand and try to stand in his way.
Reason with Todd-branch:
- Todd goes upstairs: Unmissable, he always heads upstairs, no matter what you do.
- Get to Alice after Todd: Unmissable on this branch, when Todd slapped you to the floor for trying to reason with him.
- [CROSS CHAPTER IMPACT] Gun seen in “A New Home” / Take Gun / Threaten with Gun: If you have found the gun in Todd’s nightstand in Chapter 4, you are able to pick it up to threaten him and defend Alice and you.
- Kara kills Todd: if you took the gun, Kara will threaten Todd, and a melee-combat will start. When prompted to mash
to pick up the gun again, do so and Kara will shoot him.
- [CROSS CHAPTER IMPACT]: This approach will give Kara the gun for future chapters!
- Alice kills Todd: if you took the gun, Kara will threaten Todd, and a melee-combat will start. When prompted to mash
to pick up the gun again, don’t do it – Alice will pick it up and shoot him.
- Open Front Door / Run to the Bus: unmissable after having shot Todd
- Stun Todd / Leave the Room / Todd chases Kara: no matter how good or bad you are in the unarmed melee-combat against Todd, you will always have an option to push him in some way to stun him and escape Alice’s room.
- [only on Experienced Difficulty] Todd catches them / Todd broke Kara in the Corridor: don’t run towards the stairs and let him get you.
- Try Front Door: do as prompted
- Open Front Door: pass the corresponding QTE in time
- Catch Bus / Kara & Alice fought their Way out: run towards the bus
- Miss Bus / Todd broke Kara outside: don’t run towards the bus
- Fail to open Front Door / Fight downstairs: fail the corresponding QTE
- Escape from Todd: pass the corresponding QTE
- Escape via Yard: pass the corresponding QTE
- Catch OR Miss Buss: see above
- [only on Experienced Difficulty] Fail to Escape / Todd breaks Kara outside: fail the corresponding QTE
- Escape via Yard: pass the corresponding QTE
- [only on Experienced Difficulty] Todd wins Fight / Todd broke Kara downstairs: fail the corresponding QTE
- Escape from Todd: pass the corresponding QTE
- Open Front Door: pass the corresponding QTE in time
- Run to Backyard / Fight downstairs: see written above in italic
- Kara kills Todd: if you took the gun, Kara will threaten Todd, and a melee-combat will start. When prompted to mash
Go upstairs-branch:

Kara is in Todd’s Way Upstairs / Todd shoves Kara Upstairs: go up, but don’t enter Alice’s room. Stand in the middle of the corridor instead. Now, all the fighting-choices depicted on the “Reason with Todd”-branch above become available.
- Get to Alice before Todd: head upstairs and into her room
- Reason with Todd: press
to make Kara leave Alice’s room and face Todd in the corridor
- Todd shoves Kara Upstairs: Todd will slam Kara down and now you can enter the room again and choose between the fighting-options depicted in the “Reason with Todd”-section
- Run Away: press
to take Alice and walk out of her room
- Fail to Hide / Todd takes Alice to her Room: Go out of Alice’s room and don’t move any further, until Todd comes. This leads to the Defend Alice / fighting-branch depicted in the “Reason with Todd”-section
- Hide in Corridor / Todd realizes Kara and Alice are gone: Go out of Alice’s room and hide in either room with holding
or
. When he walks past, let go off the button and proceed to the stairs.
- This will lead you to the “front door / backyard”-choice depicted in the “Reason with Todd”-section
- Todd is coming / Out of Time / Todd breaks into Bedroom: don’t press any button
- This leads to the Defend Alice / fighting-branch depicted in the “Reason with Todd”-section
- Lock Door: press
to lock the room with a time window of 10 seconds
- Grab Lamp / Todd breaks into Bedroom: grabbing the lamp next to Alice’s fortress doesn’t to much – it will lead to the regular Defend Alice-branch
- Talk to Alice / Todd breaks into Bedroom: talking to Alice won’t do much either, it will lead to the Defend Alice-branch as well
- [CROSS CHAPTER IMPACT] Way out seen in “A New Home”: Open Window: press
and
to open the window (if you found this route in Chapter 4)
- Face Todd / Defend Alice: listen to Alice’s remark and don’t climb out, but face Todd. This will lead to the standard Defend Alice-path.
- Go out: don’t listen to Alice’s remark and press
to help Alice climb out and
again to JOIN ALICE
- Fail to escape by window / Todd broke Kara outside: pass the QTE by mashing
, when Todd is trying to stop you from climbing out. Then, don’t move any further and Todd will climb out and punch you down.
- Escape by window: pass the QTE by mashing
. Then, pick up Alice by holding
to slide down the gutters and this
- leads to the “Catch / Miss Bus”-section depicted in the “Reason with Todd”-section
- Fail to escape by window / Todd broke Kara outside: pass the QTE by mashing
- Reason with Todd: press
All done! This concludes the Stormy Night chapter.

Jesse John Jones says
Hi i need help with (Todd wins fight) option.
I have tried everything and even followed the guide but it keeps sending me to the screen where i have to choose three options grab, shield and push and i’ve tried them and they don’t let Todd win.
Do you know how to do this and get this option done because its not working.
Thanks in advance
Jesse John Jones says
Don’t Worry i have just completed it, was a bit challenging and took forever.
Shana says
I am curious to know how you completed it because I am having the same problem. Thanks!
Reve says
Hey! Just for future people – you have to fight with Todd upstairs first before you can lose the fight downstairs. If you successfully hide or escape out the window, then you can’t get the Todd wins the fight ending. Also, like the guide mentions, you need to set your difficulty to Experienced.
Miss Fox says
It still doesn’t work for me. I won the fight upstairs and failed all the QTEs downstairs, and I still get the three options to shield/push/grab, meaning I win the fight with Todd. I have the difficulty level set to Experienced. Any help guys?
Dogninja says
Damage Kara in the bedroom then you should be good just don’t do anything basically and push him when the option shows up in the bedroom
MiauTheWorld says
Thank you Reve! I was having the same problem. I was able to get that node when I failed both fights (upstairs and downstairs). Kara stops working before the game can prompt Grab/Shield/Push downstairs.
Debbie says
Yeah same here please share your valuable knowledge ? seriously in need.
Dekarguy says
I was able to get it on experienced difficulty by falling most of the quick time events in the bedroom, trying the door and falling two prompts in then failing the whole fight through the downstairs. I think if Kara is undamaged to start you are unable to trigger it
genna says
do you know how i can fail to escape but escape todd? i cant do it no matter what.
hasse says
To get the failed fight downstairs.
You need to fail all upstairs to trigger the “tutorial” upstairs instead of downstairs.
Kara says
This was the trouble I had. Thanks.
Sal says
Would any of these options allow you to have Kara escape without having to save Alice? I’m confused and trying to understand if it’s the only way Kara can be alive.
Reve says
Nope, the only options are Kara and Alice escape together or Kara and Alice both perish.
Oksy says
Can Kara run away with Alice grabbing a gun, but not killing Todd?
dalailama1989 says
Hi, I’m 99% positive that it’s not possible.
When going upstairs before Todd and grabbing the gun, he will be with Alice before you.
Alice killing Todd won’t give the gun – if Kara kills him, it does.
When not grabbing the gun before going in Alice’s room and fighting, there is no way on the escape-sequence where there is time to grab the gun.
Your mother says
I want to know this too actually. I’m going to try and stun Todd then grab the gun then escape but i think it’ll just kill Kara or Todd
Marcus Lundgren says
As someone who wants to see everything a game has to offer, the billions of possible
outcomes in this game hasmademe feel extremely depressed.
I loved the game on my first playthrough, but reading through this guide has made
me realize just how insignificant my experience was. There will always be a better
choice I didn’t make. But unlike real life, here, I can tryagain and again. And again.
Forgot to fart before you tied your shoes? Don’t worry. Just replay from the previous
chapter, and you won’t have any shoes! Or perhaps go back 5 chapters and you won’t
eat that burrito that gave you the gas!
Of course, you still have to play ALL the way to the end of the game for any of this to
matter, so if it turns out that you should’ve done any of 30 trillion other things BEFORE
you had the burrito, then you have to go back to an even earlier chapter and do something
else to change the outcome. But of course, doing so could open up a new branch of stories,
all with their own, unique possible outcomes and choices…
This game is making me lose my mind. You might as well make it your life goal to visit EVERY
planet in No Man’s Sky!
I was looking forward to getting the platinum, but after realizing the endless effort that requires,
and how many years and immeasurable amounts of replays it would take to see every possible
variation of the story, I’ve decided to do nothing at all.
It’s for the best. Otherwise I’d end up institutionalized or dead…
dalailama1989 says
I feel your pain.
I like to complete everything myself, but this game showed me my limits of some sorts.
Some smaller levels can be easily done in one or two runs, this particular took me about five hours but the final chapters are crazy long and I can’t be bothered to get them all.
Still, a brilliant game – and well-worth taking the time to give it at least a second go and do everything differently than the first time 🙂
Spirit says
The platinum doesn’t actually take that much, the trophies are mostly about the bigger choices. None require you to 100% any flowchart, so it is very doable.
are you kidding says
lmao you sound like a kid dude how melodramatic can you be? barring the fact that you don’t even need to 100% every flowchart for the platinum this isn’t a difficult or long game in the slightest and it doesn’t take much time to play through it multiple times. not to mention you are severely over-exaggerating the number of different permutations there are in the story. get a grip dude if you think you’ll be insitutionalised due to playing a game for kind of a long time then you need to sort your life out.
Tony T says
Still hilarious 5 years later ?
Davis Daisuke says
Ill just shoot for happy ending. I blasted Todd so far. Lol. I hope it doesn’t ruining the ending. XD
Darren says
So I would recommend zooming in a little more on your flow chart before you screenshot and replace the ones you have. They are basically unreadable as is and not really serving any purpose
PowerPyx says
You can click the images to view the full size version, then zoom in on the text 🙂
Guillermo says
Can some one help here please. I saw the gun in “new home”. In “stormy night I left the door open when I cleaned Todd’s room, but I have tried going upstairs after Todd gets mad in every possible way and I can’t open Todd’s room door to get the gun. I want to run the game with Kara killionig Todd.
Thanks for any tips
dalailama1989 says
Another approach would be (after having seen the gun previously, of course) to go upstairs immediately and go into Todd’s room to grab the gun. He will then automatically go upstairs and be in Alice’s room before you can get there.
Be aware, that if you kill Todd, there are a few nodes in the last Chapter Battle for Detroit, which you can’t unlock, because they require him alive.
Aisha says
I have same problem
Also i play the chapter from beginning but this problem not solved
You can help me??
Guillermo says
Nope. My game is definitely not working. I have done everything, every option open in “new home” and when I come to “stormy night” i have tried to go upstairs in every possible way, but when I stand in front of Todd´s room door, I try to approach it in every way and every angle and it just does not give me the option to open Todd´s door. HELP PLEASE. THIS IS FRUSTRATING. I AM ABOUT TO GIVE UP AND THROW THE GAME IN THE TRASH.
Any idea how I can contact the developers. My game must be faulty.
Guillermo
Imaginary92 says
I would check your flowchart on A New Home and make sure the gun is unlocked.
Vincent says
Omg saaame please someone help
Vincent says
Omg I did It. I don’t know if this works for everyone but I just started it from the first checkpoint we’re you have to serve them dinner
Gray Fox says
Hi guys.the solution that Todd defeat Kara is very simple.just when fighting with he in bedroom do not anything and let three option(push/shield/grab)appear.after this run with Alice and let him catch you in downstair . This time won’t apears again that option and todd win(on any difficulty).
Gray Fox says
The correct is In Experienced difficulty
Hassan says
Can’t unlock “try front door” stuck at 94% help
Steven says
Stuck on Kara is in Todd’s Way Upstairs can’t get it done.
Rudy says
Same here. It just jumps straight to “Todd shoves Kara upstairs”.
Sage says
I know this is an old comment, but for anyone else wondering I stood close to the stairwell near Todd’s room and unlocked Kara is in Todd’s Way Upstairs.
Steven says
I can’t unlock Kara is in Todd’s way upstairs; Open front door; Miss Buss; Fail to escape.
Elisabeth says
I will explain my for solution for “Todd wins fight”. Go to Alice before him, get the option “Reason with Todd”, enter the room after he hits you, don’t do anything, get the option “push”, go downstairs, try front door and fail, don’t do anything. DONE!
Aisha says
I have done everything, every option open in “new home” and when I come to “stormy night” i have tried to go upstairs in every possible way, but when I stand in front of Todd´s room door, I try to approach it in every way and every angle and it just does not give me the option to open Todd´s door.
Ion says
Also, it’s NOT enough to just fail the QTEs downstairs to break Kara. You must also fail all QTEs in Alice’s bedroom against Todd, get to the front door succeed on the first two door prompts, fail the third, then fail all downstairs QTEs. After exhausting tries over and over this is the only way to get this ending unlocked.
Helo says
Hello. Playing in 2021 here.
Can I get the UNDEFEATED trophy (need to not lose any fight) by not moving Kara and let Todd kills Kara here?
Because it save a lot of time, you know?
Helo says
Well, never mind. I did it and i got it! It save me a lot of time
Tony T says
At the very end dont take Alice’s hand for “Distant” relationship run
