Death Stranding is a mysterious game and you may wonder what happens if you die. Our hero “Sam” is a so-called “Repatriate”. He has supernatural powers that let him come back from the dead.
Here’s what happens when you die in Death Stranding:
Sam will go to the “Seam” – a place where people cross over from the living to the dead. It looks like an Ocean and Sam is stuck in it. You control his soul and must steer it back to Sam’s body.
When his Body and Soul are reunited, you see his BB (Baby) giving you a thumbs up. Sam revives himself (or how the game would say it: he repatriates).
Then you get a second chance at life. But if you die again in quick succession you will get a Game Over Screen for good. The revive refreshes after a while and will work again in your next battle. However, some bosses are still able to kill you instantly (these are the exception though, most of the time you can revive on death).
What happens on Game Over?:
You can reload the last manual save / checkpoint and continue. You don’t really lose anything from dying – you simply get put back to the last save. There are frequent autosaves so this isn’t a big deal. You can manual save as often as you like, if you prefer.
That’s all there is to how dying and revival works in Death Stranding.
