Penta Penguin is a secret unlockable character in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (CTR). Even though this character is not needed for the “Is everyone here?” trophy or achievement, it’s still one of the best for time trials and good to complete your roster.
To unlock Penta Penguin, you must input a cheat code in the Main Menu Title Screen (where it says Adventure, Local Arcade, Online etc) and enter the following code:
- PS4: Hold L1+R1, press Down, Right, Triangle, Down, Left, Triangle, Up
- Xbox One: Hold LB+RB, press Down, Right, Y, Down, Left, Y, Up
- Nintendo Switch: Hold L+R, press Down, Right, X, Down, Left, X, Up
You should hear a confirmation sound and a character icon in the bottom left corner if you did it correctly. Penta Penguin can then be selected for every type of race. It’s a maximum speed character and very good for time trials. Unlike other speed-class characters, Penta is very small, so doesn’t obscure the view as much.

When I enter the code for Penta, it just goes to the Options screen, because Y is involved, and I never hear the noise. I am holding the bumpers…

Ah, I’m dumb. It’s the directional buttons not the toggles. And it does work, yay!
I don’t like that. Why is the only charaecter in the ENTIRE GAME, that you can only unlock VIa Cheat code?
It is because he was a secret cheat code character in the original ps1 game that had the same code to be unlocked. In the original he had max speed acceleration and turning so he was a busted character and would be re locked if you turned off the game and started it up again. In nitro fueled they made him a regular speed character and permanently unlocked when code is used. They also added a reference by having him say Penguinyay1 in his own voice because of a glitch in the original which left a couple of his voice lines still having
placeholder lines of one of the naughty dog devs saying Penguinyay1 and Penguinyay2.
I’m doing it correctly, and I don’t hear the voice, and I don’t see the character Icon, and I’m doing it on PS4 and pressing the right keys. what do I do?
Also, do I need to be online to unlock?
