Malevolent Practice is a side mission in Borderlands 3 (BL3). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Malevolent Practice Side Quest.
Malevolent Practice is unlocked when you’ve completed Lair of the Harpy.
Planet: Eden-6
Area: Floodmoor Basin
Quest Giver: Sir Hammerlock
Requirement: having finished Lair of the Harpy
Recommended Level: 25

Mission Info: You’ve got to check on Hammerlock’s prison gang and make sure they’re okay! They’re probably okay. What could go wrong in a bandit-held prison?

- Find Hammerlock’s Gang
- Search for first Clue
- Retrieve Clue
- Search for second Clue
- Kill Anointed Duo
- Pick up second Clue

Starting Location: Malevolent Practice
Go to the Anvil
Hammerlock asks us to check on his former prison-friends. Fast-travel to the Anvil to look for clues.
Find Hammerlock’s Gang
Your main goal for this mission, divided into the following objectives.
Search for first Clue
The first Clue is located not too far from the entrance, next to a concrete pillar.
Retrieve Clue
Grab the ECHO-Log and have a listen what happened to Hammerlock’s first mate.
Search for second Clue
To gain access to the second clue, you need defeat a pair of enemies, called the Anointed.
Kill Anointed Duo
They actually don’t do much and seem to mindlessly wander around. An easy target for us.
Pick up second Clue
Pick up their ECHO to gain a bit more background information.
Search for third Clue
The third clue will be located on the helipad-like structure nearby. Interact with the body on the ground.
Kill Anointed X-4
This will make another Anointed enemy spawn. As passive as the previous Duo was, he is quite active and will fly round and chase you in the shape of a fireball, dealing good amounts of damage. Make use of the Container in the middle area, so that there is no direct line between you. This will make him fall to the ground more likely, which is your chance to pump a few magazines in him.
Pick up Clue
Same as before, pick up the ECHO he drops and listen to it.
Search Dean’s Cell for fourth Clue
Now, we need to head inside the prison itself. The final ECHO is located on a prison bed.
Find Dean
Looks like Dean is the only one of the gang, who is still alive!
Talk to Dean
He will be held in another cell in the complex.
Kill the Anointed Alpha
Before we can rescue him, we have to kill yet another Anointed Enemy – and quite a large one at that.
Once he has a bubble around him, he becomes invulnerable for a time. You need to defeat his weaker clones to be able to fight him again. This part will repeat two-three times more, with up to three clones to fight.
Open the Jail Cells
Once he has been taken out, press the button on the console to release Dean.
Talk to Dean
Speak to him to finish this mission and claim your reward.
