Blood and Truth is a continuation of the „London Heist“ part in VR Worlds. They took that and turned it into a full game. It’s a cover based shooter and exclusive to PSVR. To put it simply: if you liked Bravo Team VR and its cover system, you will like Blood and Truth too. They are pretty much the same thing. I found it to be much closer to Bravo Team than the London Heist VR Worlds.
I played for 20 minutes with two move controllers. At the start of the game there’s a short tutorial to teach you the basics how to move and use your guns. To pull out your pistol you need to actually grab it from the holster. To reload ammo you must take a clip from the ammo belt on your chest and put it in the gun with the move controller. To switch to an Assault Rifle (or other weapon) you must grab it from your back, like actually reach behind your back with the Move Controller and press R2 to pull out the gun.
This makes it more realistic. The game uses the same cover system Bravo Team did. That means you point at cover, press a button and it will move you there. You cannot freely walk around. You can only point and click. That’s what many reviewers didn’t like about Bravo Team, but for me it was the reason I enjoyed it. It takes away the motion sickness that some players (myself included) experience with VR games where having to walk. The cover system is also a bit like Rainbow Six Vegas, an older game that was a popular tactical shooter in the early PS3 days. If you played the Rainbow Six Vegas games and liked them you may like this one too.
When in cover you can move your head (more precisely the PSVR headset) to naturally move your head in the game. This allows you to look out of cover just enough to shoot enemies. However, know there is no free walking in the game, it’s point and click only which might not be everyone’s thing.
The shooting is accurate. There’s also an option to slow down time which helps when armored shotgun units approach your position – then you can score precise headshots. The slow-mo takes a while to recharge though.
To me, Blood and Truth looks like one of the most promising shooters for VR so far and it’s something I’d want to play when it releases.
VERDICT: Hype Level 7.5/10
Finally some new fodder for VR and the best VR game Sony presented at Gamescom 2018 – but also the most predictable one.
Blood and Truth is developed by SIE London Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It does not have a release date yet, I would guess 2019.
