Loong Scales are a hidden Key Item in Black Myth Wukong. They are needed to fight the secret Loong bosses. Without this item you can’t summon these secret bosses scattered throughout the game. The Loong bosses are needed to complete the Journal to 100%, and they also drop various other collectibles needed for trophies & achievements.
Loong Scales Location
Chapter 2 (Yellow Wind Ridge) > Sandgate Village > Village of Despair:
Enter the cave next to Village of Despair Shrine. Run past the first two enemies (a wolf spearman and archer), when you enter the next cave section drop down the left side. If you have not been here before you may trigger the “First Prince of Flowing Sands” boss fight, he’s a big rat enemy. In the same area as the boss is a destructible wall, behind this are the Loong Scales. The wall looks like it’s made of many small clay buddha carvings, it looks different from the other rock walls.
There are two options to destroy the wall:
Method #1: If you’ve already defeated the “First Prince of Flowing Sands“, you can use the Spirit of “Wandering Wight” to break the wall. Hit the center of the wall, then it will crack. Then you can press R2/RT to squeeze through. Behind is a cave with a golden chest, in that chest are the Loong Scales. Alternatively, you can use the Transformation “Azure Dust” (from defeating “Man-in-Stone” boss).
Wandering Wight Spirit is obtained by defeating the “Wandering Wight” boss in Chapter 1 > Forest of Wolves > Outside the Forest, from this shrine walk forward to see a big guy with a stone-head. Defeat him and collect his purple spirit. You need the Blessed Gourd to collect the spirit, which is obtained from Chapter 1 > Bamboo Grove > Snake Trail, go up the stairs and talk to the Old Man NPC. If you killed the boss before getting the Blessed Gourd you can still collect the Spirit from any Shrine after obtaining the Blessed Gourd. Note that this boss disappears after having defeated the Chapter 1 Secret Area Boss “Elder Jinchi” but he respawns in New Game+.
Method #2: If you have not yet defeated the “First Prince of Flowing Sands“, you can let the boss charge into the destructible wall DURING the boss fight. However, this is a one-time event so it’s easily missed. That’s why using Wandering Wight spirit will be the better option for most players.
Ultimately, how you destroy the wall doesn’t matter. Just squeeze through the crack after destroying it and open the chest. If you are in combat you can’t squeeze through so kill off any remaining enemies in the area.
The Loong Scales can be used repeatedly at every Loong Boss location throughout the game. They stay in your inventory after use and aren’t consumed.
Hidden Loong Boss Locations
There are 4 Loong Dragons total that require the Loong Scales.
Red Loong: Chapter 1 > Forest of the Wolves > Outside the Forest: This requires the Loong Scales from Chapter 2. After you have the Scales, fast travel back to Chapter 1 via a shrine. From Outside the Forest Shrine, take the path to the left until you reach a waterfall in the corner of the area. With the Loong Scales in your inventory you will now be able to interact with the waterfall to enter the area with this hidden boss.
Black Loong: Chapter 2 > Fright Cliff > Rockrest Flat: This requires the Loong Scales from Chapter 2. After you got them, go to Rockrest Flat, from the shrine turn right and go up the path to reach a waterfall. With the Loong Scales in your inventory you can now interact with the waterfall to enter the area with this hidden boss.
Cyan Loong: Chapter 3 > Bitter Lake > Turtle Island: This requires the Loong Scales from Chapter 2. After you got them, go to Turtle Island. To the right of this shrine, go to the back right corner of the island to find a small dragon statue sitting at the edge. When approaching it you will get a cutscene and it transforms to a living dragon, he’s this boss. Only spawns if you have the Loong Scales in your inventory.
Yellow Loong: Chapter 4 > Webbed Hollow > Relief of the Fallen Loong: This requires the Loong Scales from Chapter 2 AND you must have defeated the other 3 Loong bosses (Chapter 1: The Red Loong, Chapter 2: Black Loong, Chapter 3: Cyan Loong). Then the Yellow Loong will spawn to the right of the “Relief of the Fallen Loong” shrine. To get here, start at Webbed Hollow > Cliff of Oblivion, go down the broken hand and follow the path until you can drop down the left side to a hanging bridge. Go over it to reach a narrow wooden beam with slashing spider cocoons around it. Use Cloudstep to beam past the spider cocoons and walk over the wooden beam. At the other end you reach the hidden area “Relief of the Fallen Loong”.

It’s also possible to use the Azure Dust spell to destroy the wall. Just make sure the last hit, the de-transformation jump, hits the centre of the wall
