Baldur’s Gate 3 allows players to completely change the character class at any time in the middle of the game and to respec all skill points. This guide explains how to do it. Simply put: you must talk to a ghoul called “Withers” in the Dank Crypt. Then he will show up at your camp and lets you reset character class and skills for 200 gold.
You can do this early in the game, as soon as you finished the prologue on the spaceship and crash-landed at the beach.
Step 1: Enter Chapel Catacombs
Go to Chapel Entrance, north of the beach. You must enter the catacombs under the Chapel. There are two options:
- Shoot an arrow or spell at the stone hanging over the courtyard. This will smash the floor and you can climb down.
- Go through the door by convincing the person behind it to let you in or use lockpicks to open it (can buy lockpicks from merchants in the nearest town).
Step 2: Open Sarcophagus in Final Chamber of Catacombs
Get to the very end of the catacombs under the chapel. You will need to defeat some enemies along the way. In the last room called Dank Crypt you must press a button on the wall. This will cause skeleton warriors to attack you, defeat them all. Then open the “Richly Decorated Sarcophagus” in the final chamber.
Step 3: Talk to Withers, be nice to him
Interacting with the Sarcophagus spawns a ghoulish looking character called “Withers”. DON’T ATTACK HIM! Just pick the nice dialogues and don’t choose the attack option. Here’s what I chose: 1. “Quite the Questions. What’s the reason for it?” > 1. “Yes. Ask Away” > 6. “Depends on the mortal”. Afterward, he will say that he will come to meet you again at the proper time and place. Then he walks away from you through the Crypt. Leave the crypt, don’t attack him. As long as you get the same outcome it doesn’t matter what dialogues you picked exactly.
Step 4: Meet Withers at your Camp
Click the Campfire-Icon in the bottom right of the screen and choose “Long Rest”. This will teleport you to your camp. Do this until Withers (the ghoul guy) shows up at your camp. For me it happened on my third camp visit. Don’t worry if he doesn’t show up immediately, he will automatically appear at some point. Potentially, you might need to advance the story a bit, I had already visited Emerald Grove and Blighted Village when he appeared.
Here is Withers at the camp:
Step 5: Pay Withers 200 Gold to Change or Reset your Class
When talking to Withers at your camp he will offer the dialogue option “I want to change or reset my class”. This will cost 200 gold each time you do it. Then you can pick a new character class.
Withers will permanently stay in your camp from now on. He can also revive dead companions for a fee. You can now change your class mid-game any time you want!
You won’t lose any XP, gear or game progress. There’s no downside to doing it except that it costs 200 gold, which is relatively cheap. Immediately after picking a new class you can go through all level-up screens again and pick new skills.
Bonus Tip: you can make a manual save before paying 200 gold. If you aren’t happy with the new class, reload the save to get the money back and retry.
