This walkthrough shows all puzzles and key items in Alone in the Dark (2024 Remake) with their locations and solutions. This guide lists them in chronological order by chapter.
Both Edward and Emily have some unique changes to their puzzles/key items. It’s pointed out here which puzzle/key item is unique to which character. If there is no mention of which character it’s unique to, then that means it’s there for both characters.

Chapter 1
Kitchen Garden Key / Kitchen Garden Locked Door
Once you gain control, head into the first stable on the left to pick up the Kitchen Garden Key.
You’ll now be able to unlock the Kitchen Garden door blocking your path.
Housekeeper’s Key / Laundry Room Locked Door
Once you enter the Conservatory with the giant tree, head over towards the tree and pick up the Housekeeper’s Key out of the broken pot.
You’ll now be able to unlock the Laundry Room door that’s blocking your path.
Piazza Key / Piazza Locked Door
After exiting the basement, enter the room with the open door and pick up the Piazza Key off the bulletin board.
You’ll now be able to unlock the Piazza door blocking your path.
Painted Tile / Block Puzzle
After the cutscene where you head into Jeremy’s Room, pick up the Painted Tile off the table in front of Emily. Afterwards, use the Painted Tile on the locked box on top of the dresser.
- Move top left to top middle.
- Move top left to bottom middle.
- Move bottom right to top right.
When you’re done, it should look like this and the box will open.
Batiste’s Keys / Locked Gate
Enter the Johnny the Conqueror building at the end of the street and after the cutscene with Batiste, he’ll give you his keys.
Head down the other street and once you reach the 4-way intersection, go to the right and use Batiste’s Keys on the locked gate.
Talisman / Talisman Puzzle
After unlocking the gate, go through the courtyard and up to the balcony. At the end of the balcony you’ll be able to enter a room.
Pick up the Talisman will be on the table and then interact with the object that was next to it and put in the code 358. Once you put the code in, it’ll open a nearby door to go through.
Chapter 2
Room #6 Key / Perosi’s Room Locked Door
Once you gain control, turn to your left and unlock the Clerk’s Office door with Batiste’s Keys. Once you enter the Clerk’s Office, turn to your left and pick up the Room #6 Key off the desk.
Star Sign Lock / Broken Plate
Go up to the second floor hallway and use the Room #6 Key on Perosi’s door.
Once in Perosi’s Room, go pick up Perosi’s Journal off the couch as it serves as the hint for the puzzle. Go over to the paintings on the wall and going from left to right, flip over the second, third, and sixth painting. The names should read William Arges, Franklyn Mosig, and Norah Keith. Head over to the painting by Perosi’s bed and you can cross reference the names from the previous puzzle to get the numbers above their head, which will translate to 2, 9, and 4.
Open Perosi’s Journal and you can cross reference the numbers you were given, to each of the star signs in the book as they’ll be number with Aquarius being 1, and Capricorn being 12. In this case, the numbers will translate to Pisces, Libra, and Taurus. Go over to Perosi’s desk and put in the star signs in order from left to right to get the Broken Plate.
Library Locked Door / Bolt Cutter
Head back to the Servant Stairs and use Batiste’s Keys on the Library Door.
Go into the Small Parlor and try to open the door leading to the Conservatory, which will fill the room with black water. Go grab the Bolt Cutter off the table and then use them on the Conservatory door to escape.
Well Puzzle / Broken Plate
Go back to the Kitchen Garden and turn on the water faucet near the entrance to the Garage. Afterwards, turn back around and use the Bolt Cutter on the shed to pick up the Water Hose inside. You should also interact with the ladder by the shed to put it up as it’ll be useful for shortcuts.
Go over to the well behind the statue and use the Water Hose on the Garden Hose, which will raise the bucket in the well, allowing you to grab the Broken Plate.
Talisman Clock Puzzle
Go up to the Gallery and interact with the clock to open it, then use both Broken Plates on it. You’ll need to move the pieces around in order to make it complete.
- Grab the middle left piece and rotate it to the right once, then place it top middle.
- Grab the middle right piece and rotate it to the left twice, then place it middle left.
- Grab the middle bottom piece and rotate it to the left once, then place it middle right.
- Grab the middle bottom piece and rotate it to the left twice, then place it back down.
- Grab the bottom left piece and rotate it to the left twice, then place it top right.
- Grab the top left piece and rotate it to the left once, then place it bottom left.
- Grab the top left piece and rotate it to the right once, then place it bottom right.
- Grab the top left piece and rotate it to the left twice, then place it back down.
When you’re done, it should look like this and then let you place the Talisman on it.
Using the numbers that the clock has stopped on and sorting them from biggest to smallest, you’ll end up with the number 643. Interact with the plate again to place the Talisman and put in the code. Afterwards, head into the hallway by Jeremy’s Room and go through the door that opens for you.
Jetty Key / Jetty Locked Door / Bridge Lever
Once you’re in Jeremy’s memory, head into the big barn and go through the door on the left to enter the locker room. Open the locker far right locker and pick up the Jetty Key.
After getting the key, enter the house with the truck next to it and use the Jetty Key on the locked door behind the desk.
Enter the small house and pick up the Bridge Lever then head back to the barn and use the Bridge Lever on the Bridge Operator.
Oil Pump / Tough Cloth
After reaching the Oil Pump, pull the lever next to the ladder, then climb up it. Once the wooden beam stops moving, walk across it then climb the ladder.
Once at the top, walk all the way around to pick up the Tough Cloth, then use it on the Wire to get down.
Palette Knife / Sitting Room Key / Wedged Door / Cellar Key
After making it back to Derceto you’ll be in the Small Parlor. Look down and pick up the Palette Knife and Sitting Room Key.
Use the Palette Knife on the door leading to the Drawing Room and pick up the Cellar Key off the table inside.
Cellar Locked Door / Switch / Valve Handle / Broken Plate
Go down to the Cellar and use the Cellar Key on the barred door.
Pick up the Switch off one of the wine racks and use it on the nearby fuse box.
Go pick up the Valve Handle from where the electricity was shut off, then head to the Boiler Room and use it on the Broken Valve.
Once the steam is gone, go into the little room behind where the steam was and interact with Jeremy. After the scene is over, pick up the Broken Plate off the ground where Jeremy was.
Wedged Door / Medicine Key / Dr. Jenkins Lozenges
Go up to the 2nd floor of the Servant’s Stairs and use the Palette Knife on the wedged door.
Go through the Mezzanine and into the Stairwell. Go down the stairs into the Grand Parlor and pick up the key off the broken piano.
Head back to Lottie’s Room and use the Medicine Key on the locked medicine box to get Dr. Jenkins Lozenges.
Sitting Room Locked Door / Margrave Liniment / Star Sign Lock / Broken Plate
Head to the Gallery and use the Sitting Room Key on the door to the right of the clock.
Enter Cassandra’s Room and pick up the Margrave Liniment off her desk and use both the Margrave Liniment and the Dr. Jenkins Lozenges on the medicine rack by the window.
- Grab the 3rd bottle and rotate it to the left twice then put it in the 1st spot.
- Grab the 3rd bottle and put it in the 2nd spot.
- Grab the 4th bottle and rotate it to the right twice then put in the 3rd spot.
When you’re done, it should look like this.
The bottles will reveal 3 numbers, which is 257. Using Perosi’s Journal and cross referencing the numbers with the star signs, you’ll it’ll translate to Pisces, Gemini, and Leo. Go over to the locked cabinet and put in the stars in order from left to right to get the Broken Plate.
Talisman Boiler Puzzle
Head down to the Boiler Room and use the 2 Broken Plates on the Boiler. Similar to the previous Talisman puzzle, you’ll need to move the pieces around to make the correct image. You won’t be able to move the corner pieces this time around, so you can ignore those.
- Grab the 1st piece from the 1st row and rotate it to the right twice then replace it with the 2nd piece of the bottom row.
- Grab the 1st piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the left once then replace it with the 1st piece of the bottom row.
- Grab the 4th piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the right twice then replace it with the 1st piece of the 3rd row.
- Grab the 3rd piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the left once then replace it with the 2nd piece of the 3rd row.
- Grab the 3rd piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the left twice then replace it with the 3rd piece of the 3rd row.
- Grab the 2nd piece from the 1st row and rotate it to the right once then replace it with the 4th piece of the 3rd row.
- Grab the 4th piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the right twice then put it back down.
- Grab the 3rd piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the left once then replace it with the 2nd piece of the 2nd row.
- Grab the 3rd piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the left once then put it back down.
- Grab the 1st piece from the 2nd row and rotate it to the right once then put it back down.
- Grab the 1st piece from the 1st row and rotate it to the left twice then put it back down.
- Grab the 2nd piece from the 1st row and rotate it to the left once then put it back down.
When you’re done, it should look like this and then let you place the Talisman on it.
Using the numbers from the dials on the boiler and sorting them from biggest to smallest, you’ll get the number 975. Interact with the plate again to place the Talisman and put in the code. After putting the code in, go through the door to leave the boiler room to enter another memory from Jeremy.
The Blessing / Medallion Door
Once in the graveyard, follow the pathway through the open gate and grab The Blessing medallion off the statue and use it on the nearby door, then rotate it to the left 4 times.
The Omen
After reaching the courtyard in the statue in the center, go into the left catacomb and follow the pathway until you find a statue and pick up The Omen from it.
Medallion Door
After getting The Omen and returning to the courtyard, an enemy will bust through the closed catacomb. Go through it and climb down the ladder, then use The Omen and The Blessing on the door at the end of the tunnel. Rotate the top medallion (The Omen) 6 times to the right, then rotate the bottom medallion (The Blessing) 3 times to the right.
The Sacrifice
After the chase scene in the cave, follow the pathway of the catacombs and pick up The Sacrifice off the statue towards the end of the pathway.
Medallion Door
Once you’re back to the surface by the Chapel, head towards it and use The Sacrifice, The Blessing, and The Omen in that order just to make the puzzle a bit faster. Rotate the top medallion (The Blessing) 3 times to the right, then rotate the left medallion (The Sacrifice) 2 times to the left, and then rotate the right medallion (The Omen) 4 times to the right.
Luggage Key / Barlow Lens
After you’re back at Derceto, you’ll automatically be given the Luggage Key. Head over to Jeremy’s Room and use the Luggage Key on the trunk at the foot of his bed.
Telescope Puzzle / Block Puzzle
Head to the Drawing Room and use the Barlow Lens on the telescope.
Use and
until you get a clear picture. Then use
and
to focus it until the blue, green, and red dots merge into one. If you did it right, a new star should appear extremely bright and change the room you’re in. You may need to mess around with the focus and zoom a little bit until it happens.
After you’re in the new room, interact with the giant block puzzle on the wall.
- Move the middle piece to the middle left.
- Move the bottom right piece to the bottom left.
- Move the middle right piece to the top left.
- Move the top middle piece to the middle.
- Move the middle right piece to the top middle.
- Move the top right piece to the middle right.
If you did it right, it should look like this and the number 947 should appear.
Head to the Dining Room and then go through the double door.
Chapter 3
The Key of Hubertus / Hollow Crosses
Go up to the 3rd floor of the library and pick up The Key of Tubertus off the statue.
Once the Dark man appears, turn around and use The Key of Hubertus on the Hollow Cross and climb down the ladder.
Start running back the way you came and use The Key of Hubertus on the next Hollow Cross by the stairs leading to the 1st floor, then climb up the ladder.
Go through the doorway at the end of your pathway then quickly walk out. You’ll need to wait for the Dark man to leave the room on the left side. Once he’s out, enter the room he came from and use The Key of Hubertus on the Hollow Cross and climb up the ladder that drops.
Once you reach the top floor, the Dark Man will disappear. Follow the pathway and cross the bridge connecting to the other side and use The Key of Hubertus on the Hallow Cross next to the giant cage. Once in the cage, pick up the book inside.
Stevedore’s Key / Sewer Access
Go around the back of the Harbormaster’s building, then climb up the ladder and drop down the hole in the roof.
After dropping down, pick up Stevedore’s Key next to the door, then unbolt the door to get back outside.
Run to the other side of the dock and use Stevedore’s Key on the Crane Operator, which will spawn quite a few enemies.
Once they’re dead, walk down the stairs and enter the sewer.
Pregzi Shipping Company Safe
Once you’re in Pregzi Shipping Company and are in the office, you’ll need to unlock the safe. Using the hint “What is left, Later is right, and Hell is back again” from the All His Things clue, you can unlock the safe with the combination “4 left, 5 right, 4 left”.
Talisman Puzzle
After encountering Jeremy again, there will be another Talisman Puzzle. Using Perosi’s Journal again, interact with the item on the ground in front of the sarcophagus to cross reference the star signs with numbers in order from biggest to smallest, which will give you the number 258. Interact with the sarcophagus to use the Talisman and input the code.
Rope / Temple Access
Once you reach the desert, run down to the encampment and pick up the Rope next to the trunk.
Go back to where the hole in the ground was an use the Rope on the nearby pillar that has a bunch of rope on it already, then use the rope to climb down into the temple.
Temple Puzzle
As soon as you’re inside the temple, flip the lever by the statue then go through the newly opened door.
Once you’re down the stairs, crawl underneath the pillar and flip the lever on the wall.
Pick up The Horizon out of the box and use it on the Lens Carrier in the center of the room. Interact with the Lens Carrier and move the laser to the blue eye crystal above the closed door to open it, then go through.
Once you’re at the top of the stairs, look to the left and go down the pathway with the Lens Carrier. Interact with it and move the laser to the blue eye crystal above the closed door on the opposite walkway, then move it back to the head of the giant statue movie it onto the blue eye crystal.
Head over to the door you have just opened up in the opposite walkway and head down the stairs. Turn to your right and break the wooden barricade blocking the room.
Once inside, flip the lever then interact with the Lens Carrier. Move the laser over the little blue eye crystal on the chest then pick up The Star inside.
Go back to where you came and then go up the stairs by the entrance to the walkways, then use The Star on the Lens Carrier up there.
Interact with the Lens carrier and then move the laser over the blue eye crystal above the closed door, then move the laser back to the blue eye crystal on the statues head.
Go downstairs to the door you opened up and head inside. Once down the stairs, look to your right and break the wooden barricade blocking the room off.
Once inside, flip the lever. Interact with the Lens Carrier and move laser to the blue eye crystal inside the giant eye shaped hole.
Enter the next room and use the Lens Carrier. Move the laser over the little blue eye crystal on the chest and pick up The Underworld inside.
Head back upstairs to the other Lens Carrier on the walkway you haven’t interacted with yet and use The Underworld on it. Move the laser to the blue eye crystal on the statues head.
Go up to the statues head and use the Lens Carrier. Move the laser to the blue crystal in the center of the floor.
Chapter 4
1st Floor Hall Key
Go up to the Sitting Room and once the cutscene is over, the 1st Floor Hall Key will be on the floor underneath you. If you’re playing Emily, it’ll be in the same spot but you’ll start in Grace’s Room.
Clerk’s Office Safe / Dr. Gray’s Office Key / Dr. Gray’s Office Locked Door / Stairwell Key / France
Go down to the Clerk’s Office and interact with the safe. You can find the combination for it by reading Cassandra’s Last Page which is found in her room, which is 9 left, 1 right, 3 left. After opening the safe, you’ll get Dr. Gray’s Office Key.
Use Dr. Gray’s Office Key on the locked door in the Clerk’s Office and then head inside.
Go to the desk and pick up the Stairwell Key out of the drawer, then go pick up France from the cabinet.
(Emily Only Recommendation) If you’re playing Emily, it’s recommended to go use the France item on the Globe in the Sitting Room now since unlike Edward, you don’t need to go back there again. It’s also recommended to go unlock the Stairwell already due to a certain story event for Emily unlocking the door automatically.
1st Floor Hall Locked Door / (Edward Only) Picayune / (Emily Only) Light Bulb / (Edward Only) The Missing Picture
Go to the Stair Hall and use the 1st Floor Hall Key on the locked double door.
Go down into the Empty Room and interact with the safe. You can find the combination for it by peeling back the wallpaper in the room and then looking at the last 3 digits of either Edward’s card or Emily’s ring, which is 6 left, 9 right, 2 left for Edward, and 9 left, 1 right, 8 left for Emily. After opening the safe, you’ll get a Picayune/Light Bulb.
(Edward Only Objective) Head into MacCarfey’s Room and use the Picayune on the vent in the corner to get The Missing Picture.
(Emily Only Objective) Head into Ruth’s Room and use the Light Bulb on the camera.
(Emily Only) Fuse Box / Entombment Puzzle / Infirmary Locked Door
Once you leave Emily’s memory and end up in the basement, go to the fuse box and flip the 2nd switch to turn them all down and restore power.
Pick up the Derceto Entombment Plans B on the shelf and Derceto Entombment Plans A off the table in the center, then use them both on the map in the center of the table.
- Grab top middle and move it to the top left.
- Grab top right and rotate it twice to the left then place it in the top middle.
- Grab bottom right and move it to the middle.
- Grab bottom middle and rotate it twice to the left then place it bottom left.
- Grab middle right and rotate it once to the left then place it top right.
- Grab bottom right and rotate it once to the right then place it middle left.
- Grab bottom right and rotate it once to the left then place it bottom middle.
- Grab bottom right and rotate it once to the right then place it back down.
- Grab middle right and rotate it once to the left then place it back down.
Once you’re done, it should look like this.
After the cutscene is over, you’ll get The Truth key and can unlock the door in the Repository to access the infirmary.
Locked Globe / (Edward Only) Picture Puzzle
Once you’re back at the Sitting Room, use France on the Globe. There will be a collectible inside. If you’re playing Emily, you should have already done this earlier.
(Edward Only Objective) Go into Grace’s Room and use The Missing Picture on the pile of drawings in the middle of the room.
- Grab the bottom middle car picture and rotate it once to the right then put it in the middle right spot.
- Grab the bottom right school picture and rotate it twice to the right then put it in the middle top spot.
- Grab the bottom left boat picture and put it in the middle left spot.
- Grab the top right bridge picture and put it in the middle bottom spot.
- Grab the bottom right church picture and rotate it once to the left then put it in the top left spot.
- Grab the bottom right monster picture and rotate it twice to the left then put it in the bottom left spot.
- Grab the bottom right tree picture and rotate it once to the left then put it back down.
- Grab the top right picture and rotate it once to the right then put it back down.
Once you’re done, it should look like this. The talisman will then automatically fill itself out and bring you to a new place.
(Edward Only) Bulletin Board Puzzle
Once you’re in your own office, pick up the Writing Desk Key off the table by the couch, then talk to your ghost at the desk and while he’s talking, pick up the Telegram off the desk and then use the Writing Desk Key on the drawer underneath it, then pick up the Newspaper Clippings and Photograph from inside the drawer.
After your ghost is done talking, interact with the bulletin board and use the Telegram, Newspaper Clippings, and Photograph. Once they’re placed, turn over the Telegram and the Newspaper Clippings.
(Edward Only) Hotel Map Puzzle
Once you get to the Hotel pick up the Hotel Bill off the counter. Business Card, and the Telephone Directory, then interact with the map on the bed and use all 3 items.
Go upstairs into the Hotel Room then pick up the Business Card,and the Telephone Directory, then interact with the map on the bed and use all 3 items.
- Turn over the Telephone directory and put it in the 3rd spot.
- Turn over the Business Card and put it in the 1st spot.
- Turn over the Hotel Bill and put it back down in the 2nd spot.
Once you’re done, it should look like this and will change the area again.
(Edward Only) Pearl River Puzzle
After meeting with Grace, continue across the bridge and then go up the stairs to get to the top. Enter the building at the top and then pull the lever.
After pulling the lever, go outside and vines will grab the bridge. Go back the way you came and melee the vines on both sides until they’re gone. Head to the other side of the bridge and melee the vines over there as well.
After clearing the vines and jumping back down to the ground, head back to where you started and get in the boat.
Stairwell Locked Door / Surgery Room Key / Surgery Room Locked Door / Fusebox Puzzle / Radiograph Puzzle
Head into the Stairwell and use the Stairwell Key on the locked gate, then head down into the Infirmary. If you’re playing Emily, you should have already done this earlier.
Go into the small room in the Laboratory and pick up Radiograph #2 and the Surgery Room Key off the table, as well as the Electrical Fuse off the shelf.
Go into the Quarantine Room and pick up Radiograph #1.
Go into the Infirmary and use the Surgery Room Key on the locked door, then pick up the Electrical Fuse out of the radio inside the room.
Go back into the small room in the Laboratory and use both Electrical Fuses on the Fusebox.
- Flip the 1st switch.
- Flip the 4th switch.
- Flip the 2nd switch.
Once you’re done, it should look like this with all the switches facing down.
In the same room, interact with the wall that has the other radiograph images on it and use the 2 you picked up.
- Take the 2nd radiograph from the top row and put it on the bottom area of the x-ray spot then rotate it 180 degrees.
- Take the 1st radiograph from the top row and put it on the left area of the x-ray spot then rotate it to the right until the white line perfectly aligns with the already place radiograph.
- Take the 2nd radiograph from the middle row and put it on the right area of the x-ray spot then rotate it to the right until the white line perfectly aligns with the already placed radiographs.
Once you’re done, it should look like this and you’ll get Jeremy’s Darkness:
Statue Puzzle / Talisman Puzzle
Once you’re in the Attic, interact with the box to open it, then use Jerem’s Darkness.
- Move the bottom left piece to the top left.
- Move the middle right piece to the top right.
- Move the middle left piece to the bottom right.
Once you’re done, it should look like this and let you place the talisman on it. Looking at the numbers on the panels of the box and sorting them from biggest to smallest, you’ll get the number 641. Input that into your talisman to access a new area.
Starting the Engine
Once you’re in the fuel room, pick up the Empty Gas Can out of the box and then turn the valve to turn off the steam.
Use the Empty Gas Can on the fuel tank to get a Filled Gas Can. Use the Filled Gas Can on the Power Generator then pull the lever.
Start heading back the way you came and once then use the boat winch to go down further into the boat.
Jump down and then climb up the ladder, then head into the engine room and turn it on.
Dr. Gray’s Apartment Puzzle
Once you’re in Dr. Gray’s Apartment, pick up the False Book and use it on the Bookcase.
Go into Dr. Gray’s walk-in closet and interact with the mirror, then interact with it again to pick up the Furniture Key.
Use the Furniture Key on the closet next to the bed, then head back to his desk to automatically answer the phone.
Once the clock breaks, use the talisman on it and match the position of the notches in each circle with the ones on the floor in Dr. Gray’s Apartment, which will also translate to 000.
After putting in the code, walk back into Dr. Gray’s Apartment towards his closet to enter the new area.
Snow Storm Puzzle
Once you’re in the new area, you’ll need to navigate the snowstorm until you reach the other side. Pick up the Flare Gun in the camp as it can help you see better when you shoot. You’re looking for areas like the one in the image below to help guide you through the snowstorm.
Now, well the actual way to complete the puzzle is like that, you can actually just run straight to the spot you need to go to if you know the way since there is no real punishment for running through the snowstorm blind unless you go too far in the wrong direction. You’ll know you’ve gone too far once you start walking slower and if you keep going when you’re walking slow, you’ll start to take damage. Stand in between the broken barrel and the wrapped up wood from the first image, and then look in the direction of the second image. From there, run straight and you should eventually reach an area that looks like the third image, which means you’ve made it across. If you end up reaching water, look to your left and keep walking straight and you’ll find it.
Stellarium Puzzle
Use the Sacrificial Dagger on the piece sticking out, and then use the Talisman.
- Rotate the outer layer twice to the right.
- Rotate the middle layer 4 times to the right.
- Rotate the center layer twice to the left.
Once you’re done, it should look like this:
