Curfew
Amicia and Lucas managed to escape the fort just in time to bring the calming herbs back to Hugo. Amicia is inpatient to learn if Hugo has made it through the Magister’s treatment, but Lucas invites her to resist. The Magister says that Hugo has reached the last threshold of the curse and is adamant on locking Hugo away, much to Amicia’s chagrin. If this wasn’t enough, Amicia learns that Hugo is condemned to death and there seemingly is no way of saving him. Amicia and Lucas must now head for the harbor in search of a man that will grant us passage to Marseille where the Order’s headquarters are and where Hugo’s curse may be contained. Amicia wants Hugo to live.
Reach the Docks
Follow Lucas. Guards are patrolling the streets, reminding the townsfolk of the curfew being already enforced. Amicia and Hugo have no choice, they must reach the boat.
You’ll eventually reach a beach with boats and ships.
Night Work
Find the Order’s Boat
After the cutscene, continue forward and you’ll automatically complete this objective.
Reach the Order’s Boat
Before reaching the Order’s Boat, make a slight detour to the right and at the end of the beach you’ll find Hugo’s Herbarium #3/12 Gentian.
Then, go to the opposite end of the beach, open the chest and can climb up the white-painted ledge to reach a docking area strewn with guards operating a cart.
Stay crouched and follow Lucas along the crates and eventually climb up a ladder. In here, open up the chest for materials and then continue forward. You’ll eventually reach a trapdoor. Do NOT interact with it just yet. Instead, go the opposite way and crouch under a hole in the fence. This will lead you to a secret area where you can find a crate you can push. Place the crate below the white-painted ledge opposite its location and climb up. Here you will find Souvenir #5/21 Silk Treasure.
Now, you can retrace your steps and open up the hatch to automatically drop down.
Risky Itinerary
Reach the Order’s Boat
In the next area make sure to grab a knife sticking out of a fence in the middle of the area. Remember not to use it as we will need to hijack the next Secret Chest.
To get past this enemy encounter unscathed, throw a rock at the toolbox near the stairs when no guard is looking. Go up the stairs and lift the beams to crawl under.
Continue on and, lo and behold, more rats. The entire area is now a sea of rats. You can use the barrel of tar to your advantage here with Ignifer. Shoot the barrel in front of you to set the surrounding area on fire and safely make it across to the next lantern.
Near the lantern is a brazier on a cart. This means it can be moved and used to our advantage. Set the brazier on fire and approach it push it with Lucas. The next step is a brief detour for a Secret Chest. Push the cart to the nearby ladder, climb up and open Secret Chest 2/10. Remember that in order to open Secret Chests you need knives, so never use them to kill enemies. As for this particular Secret Chest, we found a knife during the last enemy encounter.
Climb back down and this time push the cart to the opposite end until you can no more. You should now be at a new brazier.
In the next area, shoot down the carcass and then douse the nearby lantern to lure the rats to it. Now we can open the door, but before doing make sure to open the chest on the pier.
The Tar Workshop
Reach the Order’s Boat
In the workshop, wade through the tar and then turn 180° to find a hole in the cell. Cast a rock through it and at the chain to unlock the door.
Now retrace your steps and go through the unlocked door. Inside this new room is a chest with upgrade materials. Now wait for Lucas to climb up the ladder and then operate the crank to bring a platform closer to him so that the can walk on it and operate the second crank. Make your way back to the basin and wait for Lucas to pour tar into it. Now shoot Ignifer at it to get rid of the first swarm of rats.
Lucas has an idea and wants us to catch something. Point the camera on the upper right-hand corner and instruct him ( + ) to throw what he’s holding. We can now craft tar.
Craft Tar
To craft tar, to open the selection menu, then twice and to craft.
Get Back to Lucas
Now combine tar with a pot to create a puddle of tar on the empty basin and then ignite both basins with Ignifer.
Before continuing, climb up the ladder Lucas climbed down from and continue on until you find a big chest with lots of useful upgrade materials, including a Tool.
Now you’re ready to proceed and open the door. Continue forward and cross the bloody beams and make a slight detour to the left for some upgrade materials in a corner.
Continue on, but don’t squeeze through just yet. Instead, look at the fallen structure opposite the coffin and you should spot a chain you can destroy with your sling.
Destroying the chain opens up a path leading you to Souvenir #6/21 A Grain of Sand.
Now you can remove the coffin and squeeze through the crates and open the door. In the new rat-infested area, open the chest on the left and interact with the crank.
Obligatory Cooperation
Cooperate with the Soldier to Cross the Dock
Interacting with the crank spawns a soldier from the other side of the footbridge who we need to save in order to unlock Mercy. This trophy is a callback to a similar trophy we unlocked in Innocence. In order to save him and unlock the trophy, here’s what you need to do.
- From the crank’s location, shoot the drawbridge left of the soldier allowing him to move forward. The soldier will now interact with a second crank on his side which will lift the boat in the middle of the area and move a platform towards our location.
- Interact with the barrel crank to release tar into the basin below. Then, cast Ignifer into the basin to light it up.
- Stay on the platform and instruct Lucas to operate the crank that we operated at the start of this area. This will lead us to the next section ahead and Lucas will stay behind for now.
- When you can reach the area on your left, instruct Lucas to let go of the crank. In here, grab the materials from inside the chest.
- Step on the platform again and interact with the tar barrel once again. Cast Ignifer into the basin again.
- Leave the platform and approach the crank near the chest we’ve just opened up and tell Lucas to operate his crank. As he does, operate the crank in front of you. Lucas will move the platform forward and you will lift the boat. Once the platform has gone past the boat, release the crank and tell Lucas to do the same.
- Now interact with the crank on the platform to release tar once again into the basin and light it up with Ignifer.
- With all three tar basins lit up, Lucas can now come back to us, but the light isn’t bright enough to scare off all rats and make it safe for Lucas to cross. Craft tar and cast it at the first basin to make the fire brighter and allow Lucas to pass.
- Interact with the crank again to raise the boat and allow Lucas to continue across.
- Climb down the stairs to reunite with Lucas.
- Now shoot the chain to release the drawbridge and allow the soldier to get across.
IMPORTANT: now pause the game and read before continuing so you can get ready for the next steps. - The soldier will now come down the stairs. When the soldier stands still, shoot him with Ignifer. This will burn his outfit, but won’t kill him. The goal here is to get rid of the rats around him and this is the only way to do it.
- Now quickly shoot tar at him to make the fire burn more brightly. This will make all rats between you and the soldier scurry away. Now quickly run up the stairs and interact with the door. The trophy should now unlock. If at any point you fail before reaching the door, just let the rats kill you and try again.
Reach the Order’s Boat
Now that we’re safe again we can resume our search for the Order’s Boat. Inside the house we found refuge in is a workbench. You should now have plenty of materials to upgrade both Gear and Instruments at least once. Go back outside to meet Jospeh. Lucas and Amicia plead for his help and he agrees to meet them at the next pontoon. Joseph really seems to be on our side as he also saves our life thereafter.
The Mass Grave of the Marshes
Get to Joseph at the Pontoon
Continue forward into the marshes and Joseph will take care of the first two soldiers.
Loot their bodies for materials and proceed towards the hamlet in the middle. Light up the brazier and then enter the hamlet with the already lit brazier.
As you scour the environment for a way forward, Joseph should get rid of both soldiers for you.
Dispose of the spearman if need be.
A chest is at the opposite end of the camp.
And some materials in another corner of the camp.
Just before the bonfire is also a knife stuck in a tree stump.
We will need this knife in Chapter 5 for a Secret Chest, so don’t use it under any circumstance. When you reach the bonfire, you’ll see lots of soldiers patrolling the area. Crouch through the left side of the area and carefully study the soldier’s walking pattern to decide when to move further.
When he goes into the rat-infested area, instruct Lucas to cast Stupefacio at the lantern, simultaneously putting out the lantern and the torch held by the guard. This will quickly get rid of the guard.
Now ignite the lantern again and proceed where the rats killed the guard. In here there’s also a big Tool Chest that you can safely reach now that the rats are munching on the soldier’s corpse.
If a guard comes snooping, have Lucas use Stupefacio again on fire sources for a quick elimination. Keep going forward, flanking the left side of the area with no fire sources and you should find a new chest inside a dark barn.
Now backtrack to the right side of the bonfire where there’s another small chest, near the water.
From the small chest, shoot the archer on top of the barn and climb up here to find another big chest.
Climb down the stairs and light up the lantern to find another chest.
We’re now safe to cross the drawbridge and reunite with Joseph.
Hugo’s Call
Run from the Rats
Our heroes cannot catch a break though. A loud thunderous tremor invades the city.
It’s Hugo’s Macula which, this time, has released an enormous wave of rats devastating the city. Amicia, as she was trying to go get Hugo and Beatrice, comes across the wave and all she can do is run to save her skin.
Keep holding for the entire escape section, running through alleys, squeezing through crannies, sprinting on rooftops.
Amicia manages to get to Hugo and Beatrice just in time to calm her little brother down, who quietens down the waves.
Reach the River
The red town is gone. All is in flames, but Hugo, Amicia, and Beatrice are alive and ready to regroup with Lucas who is awaiting them at the harbor, ready to sail for Marseille.
This concludes Chapter 4 “Protector’s Duty” in A Plague Tale: Requiem. Now Chapter 5 “In Our Wake” starts.

Michael Cooney says
There was no knife?
PowerPyx says
The knife spawns are based on the gameplay difficulty. At higher difficulties fewer knives spawn. This walkthrough lists all possible knife spawns (all that would spawn on Narrative). But with each higher difficulties a few knives are removed. So if one doesn’t spawn that’s why.
Red says
I just switched to narrative mode before going down the hatch and the knife appeared in the fence. Then just switch back to hard if you want.
Joshua B says
There is still a knife spawn in the same area on Hard difficulty. However, it is in the covered area to the left of the soldiers. You can slip through a crack in the wall to appear directly beside it, or just loop back to it from the other side.
Evan says
It seems I’ve encountered a bug because I can’t use my sling at all during cooperate with soldier section. So I’m stuck until I find a fox for it
PowerPyx says
Replaying the Subchapter via Chapter Select should fix it. If not, you can try replaying from the Subchapter before that.
I also had weird little issues like this, but Chapter Select always fixed it.
cory says
do you need to get all secret chest in 1 playthrough? i swear i got the one in chapter 4 but on my trophy card it only shows 10 percent meaning its as if i missed it.
PowerPyx says
No, getting them via Chapter Select works fine and updates the trophy tracker. If it doesn’t then it must be buggy. Normally the trophy pops fine when grabbing missed ones in Chapter Select. I also grabbed some via Chapter select myself because I didn’t have a knife and had to replay. Got it just fine, I checked the trophy tracker after each one and it always increased.
