In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla you can parry certain incoming attacks. To parry, press the block button L1 (PlayStation) / LB (Xbox). Holding the button will perform a block, tapping it for only a moment will parry.
The timing is important for this. You must parry just as the enemy attack hits. The parry has a short time window of about 1 second. The best method is to hit the parry button as soon as the enemy is starting their attack.
Parries work with any equipped weapon or shield (including dual-wielding and small weapons like daggers). It’s all about getting the timing right. You can also try spamming the parry on enemies, which is great for learning this move, but some attacks will get through when the timing is off. Perilous attacks (red rune attacks) cannot be parried or blocked and must instead be dodged.
Parrying is especially useful against enemies with unbreakable shields (like bosses and Zealots). This will trigger a counter-attack, giving you time to land a combo before the shield themselves again. Rinse and repeat until they are dead but evade their red rune attacks.
