How to Switch PS5 DualSense Controller from Bluetooth to Wired USB

November 7, 2020 by PowerPyx 1 Comment

A feature that the PS5 introduces is that you can switch your controller from using Bluetooth to Wired USB. This didn’t work on the PS4’s DualShock 4 (it could be connected via USB but still used bluetooth to communicate with the console).

How to Switch PS5 DualSense to Wired USB Connection:

PS5 Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Communication Method > Use USB

Please note this is only available for the PS5 DualSense and does not work with the PS4 DualShock 4 controller (it can only use bluetooth even when connected via USB).

Why use Wired PS5 DualSense Controller?

This reduces the input lag (ping). The bluetooth (wireless) option puts you at a disadvantage in online games because it takes the controller a few milliseconds longer to communicate your button presses to the PS5 console. When you add this up with the ping from online games and the input lag of your TV this can result in over 200ms input lag total. Using a wired connection is far more stable. This is also one of the reasons why at tournaments you wouldn’t see professional Esport players use bluetooth, because it’s too slow and a disadvantage in competitive gaming. As another benefit, using the wired option means your battery will never run out in the middle of a match. If your PS5 is far away from where you’re sitting or there’s anything in between that obscures the line of sight, or you have many other wireless signals overlapping each other, it can result in the bluetooth controller having multiple seconds input delay at random or even disconnecting with full battery. If you experience any massive controller input delay be sure to use the USB connection instead to fix it.

Well that’s depressing, because I have to put mine behind my tv and table, so the light of it doesn’t annoy me.

I’m not sure why a console needs to shout ‘hello I’m here!’ when the sole purpose of it, is for it be shouting from the screen ‘hello I’m here!’.
