Starting Location: A Message In Fire
Search for Umugi Cove
Once you arrive at the quest marker, you will be given a search area to find Umugi Cove. The Umugi Cove Location is where the grey Masako Tale icon is on the map, in the left half of the search area. Look for a path with red flowers (as seen on the 3rd and 4th image above), this is the path leading into Umugi Cove. Finding this story-related location also unlocks the Den of Thieves.
Follow the guard to meet Lady Sanjo
As soon as you approach the mission marker, a cutscene will automatically start where you’re greeted by a guard who leads you along a short path to Lady Sanjo. Follow him through the house, up a ladder and head around to the left to find her.
Speak with Goro
Head back down the ladder and find Goro in this room.
Walk with Goro

Travel with Lord Shimura to meet Goro
Mount your horse and follow Lord Shimura on the linear road to meet Goro.
Follow Goro to his boat
Follow Goro on horseback for a short distance, then you will automatically dismount. Shortly after you’ll get a cutscene.
Travel with Lord Shimura to Fort Mitodake
Follow Lord Shimura up some grassy hills to the ambush point.
Ambush the Mongol patrol with Lord Shimura
You’ll see a patrol on horseback with a carriage down below. Wait until Shimura attacks them, then use your elevated position to do an Assassination on them (and chain it if you have unlocked the ability).
Attack Fort Mitodake with Lord Shimura
Slaughter a load more Mongols… the usual.
Open the gates with Lord Shimura
Press to open the front gate.
Attack Fort Mitodake with Lord Shimura
You’ll be ambushed by archers. Lord Shimura will then open a gate and you can confront your enemy. Take them out with your own projectiles or get up close and slice through them. Keep murdering Mongols as you progress, until eventually you get a cutscene where some Mongols use a trebuchet with burning projectiles against you, called “hwacha”.
Fight to the hwacha tower with Lord Shimura
Follow along the path up the hill towards the hwacha, you will encounter many Mongols along the way. Luckily, Shimura will help you slay them. You’ll probably also get hit with the raining projectiles of the hwacha, so make sure to heal often. You can see where they will land, as shown by a white circle on the ground so use your sprint or dodge roll to avoid them. If you stand in the middle of the circle when the projectiles hit, it will almost certainly instant-kill you.
Defend Goro’s ship
You are now using the hwacha to defend Goro’s ship (the one with the sails). Aim with the right stick, which you can use to alter the trajectory and direction, then use to fire. You have to be quite quick as if even one ship reaches Goro’s, you’ll fail the objective. Once you knock out 6 ships, you’ll have to destroy some archers on the shore, then shift your attention to three larger ships. These will take more hits to down. After you’ve destroyed these, there will be another handful of ships to destroy.
This finishes the A Message In Fire quest in Ghost of Tsushima.
