Coronation is Chapter 16 in A Plague Tale: Innocence. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of Chapter 16 “Coronation”.
Objectives:
- Enter the City
- Reach the Cathedral
- Eliminate the Patrol
- Find the Exit to the House
- Reach the Cathedral
- Join Melie and Lucas While Protecting Yourself With the Cart
- Reach the Cathedral
- Kill Vitalis
Hugo and Amicia are reunited once more, but Beatrice is still Vitalis’s prisoner. Hugo passed the Final Threshold and is now in full control of the rats. Arthur has been killed by Lord Nicholas and Melie seeks revenge for her loss. Rodric and Lucas have also suffered personal losses and want to lend a hand in the plot to overthrow the Grand Inquisitor. Time for everybody to get revenge. Time for the final showdown!
Enter the City
Walk up the hill with Lucas, Rodric, and Melie. Unfortunately, the rats have destroyed the quickest access to the city and our only chance is to enter through a well-guarded route.
The group splits: Melie and Lucas get chased by two guards in the attempt to leave through a door unnoticed, while Rodric, Hugo and Amicia are left behind to find a different route.
Reach the Cathedral
Use Rodric to take down the only remaining guard.
Then, continue on until the camera pans over the cathedral. Here, we’re going to make our first detour for last and final Alchemist Cart (5/5): immediately after you’ve seen the cathedral in the distance, turn right to see a big white X on a door. Go past the fence and use Rodric’s knock-out ability to quickly dispose of the guard and enter the cart.
Now, retrace your steps until you see a torch next to large rat pit. At the basis of the torch you’ll see red fumaroles indicating that a horde of rats is trapped beneath the ground and is calling to be liberated. Cast Exstinguis to put out the fire and free the rats. Then, use Imperium on the nearby guards. Now, you’re immune to the rats and you can use them to kill enemies at will.
Before continuing, we need to make our second detour for a collectible (Curiosity 25 – Discipline). Near the two guards is an alleyway that leads to a guard’s corpse. The collectible is sitting at his feet.
In the next enemy area, you need to first free the rats from beneath the ground by dousing the fire in the alcove to your right. Try to do this without getting noticed.
Then, quickly get rid of the archer on the ramparts with a rock.
As for the two guards on the right of the area, headshot the one with no helmet and cast a rock at the other’s lantern. Then, use the rats you’ve just freed and those in the cage in the middle of the square to make quick work of them. As for the one on the left of the area, use any killing method that suits your needs. Remember to hide if you get spotted. Apart from the guard with no helmet, all other guards are pretty slow. When you’ve cleared the square of enemies, proceed to meet one more armored brute. Cast Exstinguis at his torch and then send some rats to him.
Continue under the scaffolding, then order Rodric to kill the right guard while you cast a rock at the left one.
Next, have Rodric lift the portcullis for you and enter the next guarded area.
Here, start by casting Exstinguis at the torch on your right. Use + to do it unseen and then have Hugo direct the rats at the first two guards (the one with no helmet and the one with a shield).
Now, there should only be a couple of guards left. When the guards are distracted, move to the next fence as shown in the picture below and cast a rock at the archer in the distance and Exstinguis at the torch. A guard should be alerted, simply direct the rats to him.
The area should be clear of enemies now. Now, approach the pit on the other side of the area to reunite with Lucas and Melie.
The pit is uncrossable, but luckily for us there’s a door to a house nearby that we can interact with and let Rodric shoulder it open.
Eliminate the Patrol
As Rodric breaks the door down, a new wave of guards comes looking for us. Remain hidden and far from the guards to quickly take them all down. As usual, cast rocks at the guards with no helmet and Exstinguis at those carrying torches to allow the rats to scurry over and eat them.
Once you’ve killed all of them, don’t enter the house just yet. We need to make our third detour for another collectible (Herbarium 13 – Christmas Rose). Enter the area the guards came from and walk down to the near patch of grass. Here you’ll find the collectible.
Retrace your steps and enter the house. The house is regrettably on fire.
Find the Exit to the House
Shuffle through the house on fire, casting Ignifer when you need to clear the path.
Grab any useful crafting materials and then ask Rodric to break the first door open to enter a new area of the house.
Continue on until you can cast Ignifer at some straw and ask Rodric to open the door for you. Finally, unlock the door to get back to breathable air.
Reach the Cathedral
Have Rodric kill the guard in front of you.
In the new enemy area, have Rodric take down the guard carrying a lantern while you take care of either one of the guards left. Then, take down whatever enemy is left.
Before moving on, we need to get to a secret area for the last chapter-specific trophy The Blacksmith. To the right of where you first entered the area is a gate that is locked from the other side.
To the right of the cart on fire is an infested alleyway. Take this alley until you can no longer continue, then move your camera around until you can see the gate’s lock.
Bring it down with a rock, then go through the gate. Walk down the road to reach Rodric’s old forgery and witness him get emotional. When Rodric stops talking, the trophy should pop.
Join Melie and Lucas While Protecting Yourself with the Cart
Go back to the cart area and interact with it. Rodric will push you away, volunteering to push the cart for Amicia and Hugo in spite of the archers ready to strike him down.
Shortly after, more enemies will come attacking you. Fortunately, they’re all with no helmets, so rocks will do. Take the path down the stairs. Keep down, avoiding arrows, and make sure you knock out the guards coming from behind as well.
Meanwhile, Rodric has been hit, but succeeds in escorting Hugo and Amicia to the portcullis and safety. Amicia and Rodric lift the portcullis to let Hugo through, then Rodric holds it for Amicia.
Melie and Lucas hold the portcullis for Rodric, but he decides to sacrifice himself to give the group a chance.
Reach the Cathedral
With Rodric dead, our heroes have lost a valuable member of the team, but they have to keep going.
In the next area, cast rocks at the enemies’ lanterns and use Hugo’s Imperium to kill them. Before climbing the gallows and accessing the cathedral’s steps, grab the last collectible (Curiosity 26 – Inquisitor’s Manual) found behind some barrels to the right of the gallows’ stairs.
Then, proceed to final area before the cathedral. Here, simply direct the rats to any incoming card, remembering to first douse the guards’ lanterns if need be. Time to kill Vitalis.
Kill Vitalis
Inside the cathedral, Vitalis is awaiting us. Amicia makes sure that the doors to the cathedral are locked so that no-one can assist Vitalis. Beatrice is still locked up in her cage and Vitalis has passed the Final Threshold as well.
Hugo feels the rats want to come out and they’re going to be exactly the help we need in this fight. The fight spans over two sequence. During the first sequence, we need to use Hugo’s powered-up Imperium to create eddies of rats to dismantle the horde of “Angels” and get us closer to Vitalis. During the second fight sequence, Vitalis will try to drop towers of Angels on Amicia or trap her around them while Hugo cast eddies of his own rats at him. However, lit braziers will come down from the ceilings and it’s up to Amicia to douse them off to create a path for Hugo’s hordes.
When you’re in control of Amicia again, simply walk towards Vitalis. As Hugo calls his rats to him, Vitalis drops some lit braziers from the ceiling and unearths his Angels, seemingly outnumber Hugo’s rats. Vitalis’s Angels are impervious to anything that’s fire and are stronger than Hugo’s rats.
For the first fight sequence, concentrate enough rats in the same area to form an eddy, then send it at the masses of Angels to destroy them.
Rinse and repeat, with the occasional dousing of braziers.
When the first fight sequence is over, Beatrice’s guard is killed by Melie and Beatrice is freed by her and Lucas. Immediately after, the second fight sequence starts.
Throughout this second part of the fight it is very important to listen to Hugo’s cues. He will constantly give you tips and warnings on what to do. The idea is to be doing something when he speaks. First, Vitalis will drop towers of Angels on Amicia that you can dodge with or by running with . During this first attack type, make sure that you stay among your rats. The idea is not to have any towers of Angels dismantle on the main path because Hugo will need this to send his rats to Vitalis when he’s vulnerable. If each tower of Angels that Vitalis drops on you breaks near the sea of Angels, Hugo will have enough room to attack Vitalis.
After two towers, Vitalis is vulnerable. Instruct Hugo to attack him, then quickly equip a rock to hit him in the head. Make sure to avoid incoming eddies of Angels as you do this.
Next, Vitalis will start using a second type of attack, used intermittently with the towers: he will unearth Angels from the ground. Run outside the dusty area when you see one, making sure that no Angles end on Hugo’s path.
Meanwhile, some lit braziers will from the ceiling. Douse them as Vitalis prepares his next attack. After two attacks, Vitalis will become vulnerable again. Simply have Hugo attack him and be ready to cast a rock at his head.
Final round: Vitalis is getting weaker and his attack types won’t change. As opposed to the previous rounds, this time you will get attacked twice for each attack type. As you instruct Hugo to land the final blow, douse the fire from the last two braziers and then headshot him with a rock. Vitalis’s history and Hugo’s cured, free from the slavery of the Macula.
This concludes Chapter 16 “Coronation” in A Plague Tale: Innocence. Now the Epilogue / Chapter 17 “For Each Other” starts.

I have the problem that the door to the collectible (Herbarium 13 – Christmas Rose) is not open and I can not open it either. Even restarting the checkpoint did not work.
Sandra says
I thought that too! But if you try too open the door to the burning house, guards will come out and leave the door open.
Popo says
Just wanna point out that Coronation is a silver trophy 🙂 other than that, great guide 🙂
PowerPyx says
Good spotting, this has been fixed – thank you!

This is the second chapter where your guide has led me to progressing the story and THEN saying, “oh wait, there’s a collectable”. -_- And then of course, even when I try to reload a checkpoint, it’s still beyond being able to get said collectable. So I have to replay the whole chapter. Put a ?warning? at the beginning of a paragraph if a collectable is missable by simply entering a building. This was beyond frustrating, as I shouldn’t have to read ahead of you telling me to progress the story.. But not really.
FranciRoosters says
Thank you fr your comment. Can you please tell me which collectible you’re referring to? None of the collectibles in the game are missable, but if you tell me which collectible you’re talking about I will edit the guide with your suggestion. Thanks!
Sarah says
Are you talking about the Christmas Rose? I missed this one too by not reading ahead, unfortunately. 🙁

I have a problem, I killed the guards that already existed then I saw Melie and Lucas on the other side then I progressed towards the door of the burning house to open it, at first Rodrick said that he is going to do it then the extra guards came out and everything was as it is supposed to be , but I died during the first attempt so I respawned in front of the burning house and now I try to open it it won’t open and I cant get Rodrick to open it neither and there are no guards and nothing to do and I can’t proceed any longer so I am basically stuck and I don’t know if that’s a glitch or what , can anyone help me please?
Hanah Redmond says
Good. I’m not the only one it happened to. Sadly we had to replay the whole chapter to get it to work again.:(
Another way says
Rodric pushing the cart part is bs, I swear arrows come through the cart and kill me, I make it all the way til the soldiers come from behind and everytime the rectile locks on to the 1st guy then the shot misses so I hit him with the sleeping stuff but by then its too late to hit the 2nd with a rock. But the first shot won’t stay locked on. Man I swear ?.
RageQuit says
Same! Tried 5848364747463 times and not getting passed anytime soon!!?
ruin says
yea that part is complete crap. rock misses the guard coming from behind every time.
Vivek says
Finally made it after about 15 attempts. Man i bought this game because it’s atmospheric and story driven, but the combat lock on here was unnecessarily difficult. If i wanted to die 15 times in one section I’d replay bloodborne ffs. Tbh it’s not even that difficult, just the mechanics are clunky as hell! Now I’m not too sure if requiem is gonna be worth it… Hmm..

For anyone struggling with the Roderic-Cart area, I finally beat it after many tries. It required a lot of time sensitive sling work.
For the first three guards, Hugo calls out about the soldiers ahead, prepare your sling (LT and RT). Then you just have to get the aim right the moment the guard gets through the gate. Right after the first guard dies, have the sling prepared immediately for the next one. Repeat on the last.
For the next five that come from behind, have the sling prepared immediately after Hugo says there’s more. That should make your sling ready to kill the first guy who comes. Again, quickly prime your sling for the next one and then for the archer running behind. For the two that run in last who are close together, if you prepare fast enough, you’ll be able to kill one once he comes into sight and the other will be a closer kill (don’t wait for your sling’s aim to glow yellow, a filled white shape is enough).
Gerard ten Tusscher says
After many times I finally came through the cart area. Stay next to the last Weel. Have your sling prepared for the first one. Than make a few steps again for the second guard. Now you are on top of the stairs. Aim before the second one is coming. Shoot before he reaches the gate. Another few steps and now you are on the second step of the stairs. Aim and shoot the third guard again before he reaches the gate. Now run down and up the other stairs to rhe third step from above. Aim and shoot maybe you have the sleeping stuff and pres X and refill because two are coming. Than shoot the one with arrows. Then run to the cart and aim at the first one to come. The second one is extremely difficult. But shoot before your aim is yellow and if you are lucky you gave here the sleeping stuff and pres x. Your done.

Thanks for the guide. It’s been very useful. I’m having a hard time with Vitali, especially the final round… I stopped counting how many times Amicia’s died in that cathedral lol. But I’ll get through it eventually. ? It just seems silly to me that, when he is weakest, he launches twice as many attacks. No logic behind that, beyond making us suffer lol. ?
