In Sekiro Shadows Die Twice you must find the Lapis Lazuli Locations to upgrade all the Prosthetic Parts to the maximum level. Lapis Lazuli is an upgrade material needed for the final tool upgrade. This guide will show you all Sekiro Lapis Lazuli Locations in chronological order. You will need 10 of them to be exact. In a single playthrough you can only obtain 6 of them so you should make sure you got all of them in your first playthrough. In the next playthrough you can find them again at the same locations!
There are 2 trophies and achievements connected to Lapis Lazuli. Fully upgrading one tool unlocks Lazuline Upgrade, fully upgrading all tools unlocks Master of the Prosthetic.
MISSABLES WARNING: You won’t be able to get even a single Lapis Lazuli if you go for the Shura Ending! All of them are directly connected to events in Fountainhead Palace which isn’t possible to be visited during Shura Ending. Shura Ending means betraying Kuro. So to get the Lapis Lazuli you must stay loyal to Kuro! After defeating the Corrupted Monk & Guardian Ape main bosses the story makes you talk to Owl on the Tower Roof of Ashina Castle. He presents you with two dialogues (betray Kuro or stay loyal to Kuro). Make sure you pick his 2nd dialogue option “Break the Iron Code. Stay Loyal to Kuro”. Only then you can get these collectibles.
Useful Guides:
- Sekiro Shadows Die Twice All Prosthetic Tool Locations
- Sekiro Shadows Die Twice All Treasure Carp Scale Locations
Lapis Lazuli Location #1
For this one simply defeat the Shichimen Warrior in Fountainhead Temple.
Lapis Lazuli Location #2-4
All of these are connected to the Treasure Carp Scale Merchant in Hirata Estate and his secret questline. You’re going to need at least 19 Treasure Carp Scales for this. See Sekiro Treasure Carp Scale Locations.
Step 1: In Fountainhead Palace, activate the Feeding Grounds idol, talk to the NPC there and ring the bell to call the Great Colored Carp. To reach the Feeding Grounds, we’ll start at the Palace Grounds idol. You’ll pass by it on the normal story path, it’s unmissable. Just play through the region until you reach the Palace Grounds. From there, take a right turn in the next building (squid enemies inside). Behind the building you can grapple to the roof and from there to a tree branch, a temple roof, and ultimately the Feeding Grounds. Talk to the blue fish-like NPC and ring the bell so the Great Colored Carp appears.
Attention: Before advancing to the next step you should feed the Great Colored Carp 2 x Precious Bait (this is found in the big lake where you ring the bell, as normal item pickups). Doing so grants you 4 Treasure Carp Scales which can be missed once you complete Step 4.
Step 2: From Feeding Grounds idol teleport to Hirata Estate and talk to the Scale Merchant there (found in the lake at the start of Hirata Estate). Buy any items from him that amount to 7 treasure carp scales total. For example, buy the mask fragment that costs 7 scales or mix up the other items to spend 7 scales.
Step 3: After spending 7 scales you unlock the option to “Talk” to him. Talk to him twice, exhaust his dialogues and he gives you the “Truly Precious Bait”.
Step 4: Head back to the Feeding Ground, feed the carp the “Truly Precious Bait”. This will poison it.
Step 5: Fast Travel to Sunken Valley – Guardian Ape’s Watering Hole. The Great Colored Carp will have stranded there, all you find is its deceased body with a glowing item pickup before its mouth. Pick this up to unlock the Great Colored Carp trophy / achievement. That’s the entire “boss fight”, you just poisoned the fish and it died. Bring the item you found back to the scale merchant so he can become a carp himself.
Step 6: A Lapis Lazuli will be next to him and he will also sell 2 more for 6 scales each.
Lapis Lazuli Location #5-6
This final 2 Lapis Lazuli are granted for defeating the Demon of Hatred. He only appears after defeating Divine Dragon and can be found at the same place you fought Gyoubu Oniwa, your first main boss in the game (Ashina Outskirts – Ashina Castle Gate). To reach the area you will have to use the kite to the right of the main stairs in Ashina Castle and follow the path through the Outskirts till the very end until you reach an Idol which will transport you to the boss area. You can use the Malcontent Whistle Upgrade to stagger him 3 times, but those are best used in his third form.
That’s all the Lapis Lazuli Locations in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice. Remember you can only get 6 per playthrough but need 10 total for all Prosthetic Tool Upgrades. So be sure to grab the remaining ones in your second playthrough in New Game+. You can start NG+ by praying at the idol of the Dilapidated Temple.

Dante says
On Fountainhead Palace near the pot merchant, look down the cliff in the water there a treasure carp, that’s the merchant now
Alii_m2 says
Thank you dante
angelo says
Is it true that okami warriors drop lapis lazuli?
Alii_m2 says
I never seen any video or picture about it
JeromeG says
Okay, to fully upgrade all your shinobi tools you need the second playthrough right? So, do they simply respawn? So if I get to the merchant again and recollect the treasure carps, I can just repurchase two more?
JeromeG says
I just want to clarify.
Marcus says
New game+ resets everything, all bosses and items you keep your character progression but start the game again
Felipevbrt says
Can we carry lápis lazuli tô New game +?
Kaelysium says
Yeah, just like any material, you can carry lapis lazuli to ng+
Zac Morris says
I just got a lapis lazuli from the Shichimen Warrior Boss in Fountainhead Palace. Maybe there is a chance for other late game bosses to drop them as well thus negating going to the Fountainhead Palace in the second playthrough.
Zac Morris says
Nevermind. It’s mentioned above.
Nate Berguss says
I defeated the demon of hatred. Where am I granted the Lapis Lazuli?
PowerPyx says
Right after the fight it drops as a reward. I added in my video of the boss, you can see it dropping there at the end. It’s an automatic thing when you beat it.
EgoMagnaSum says
Ah! Well, I was not careful enough to this guide and used scales to buy the dragon mask, and now I have not enough scales to buy the lapis-lazuli from the merchant, despite getting all of them. Guess I will be in for a 3rd playthrough or to defeat demon of hatred a second time (not sure which is worse).
Big dogg says
Then look better. I bought everything and have 2 spare scales left because theres nothing left to buy
Dominick N Bolieau says
you didn’t get all of them then, because I had extras at the end of my play through
Dominick N Bolieau says
use precious bait
Dominick N Bolieau says
i forgot and I had just enough still to buy everything so there is at least two extra in the game although I did have six unused bait
EgoMagnaSum says
Hi guys, thanks for you answers.
Fact is I’m f*cking dumb –‘ I had already bought them. I thought they could only be purchased after killing the giant fish.
Thank you for making me double-check!
DeathMutate says
Im on 3rd playthrough and lapis lazuli seems to be not available from the pot noble? I just beat genichiro. Im short of 6 lazuli
iNeegma says
Dear PowerPyx, please mention to feed the Great Carp regular bait first (to get 4 scales) before the poisonous one.
PowerPyx says
Why is that? I never did that and got the Lapis Lazuli anyway. I only fed it the poisoned bait, nothing else.
iNeegma says
Just as a warning not to miss the scales. I fed the poisoned bait first thus eventually locking myself out of the 4 scales you get for the regular bait (read the scale guide after this one).
PowerPyx says
Ah yeah, you are totally right on that. Should’ve mentioned it, I only wrote the minimum requirement for the purpose of getting the Lapis Lazuli but you’re right and this has been updated! Though I can say even without those 4 there are enough scales in the game to buy everything trophy-relevant so it should not be a huge problem, but definitely worth a mention. Thanks for helping to make the guide better =)
GetRDone says
I fought the NPC at the feeding grounds idol after I poisoned the Carp. He dropped 4 Lapis Lazuli. Be aware that this NPC is fast, has two lives, and has a couple one hit kill grappling moves. It is a battle of endurance.
