The Fine Joys of Tobacco is the 38th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Fine Joys of Tobacco Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.
The Fine Joys of Tobacco is unlocked after completing Advertising, the New American Art – II.
Quest Giver: Hosea
Chapter: 3
Region: Lemoyne
Gold Medal Requirements:
- Silently kill the Gray Sean distracts in the wagon store
- Douse the fields within 2 minutes 20 seconds
- Kill 5 Grays during the escape
- Complete the mission without taking any health items
Starting Location: Braithwaite Manor, Lemoyne
Talk to Hosea
Travel to Braithwaite Manor to speak with Hosea and Catherine Braithwaite. After some aspersions about your intelligence, you will be dispatched with Sean to drive a wagon to Caliga Hall.
Along the way, Sean will fill you in on the plan: you are going to torch Gray’s tobacco fields using the highly flammable moonshine.
As you approach the Gray’s fields, Sean says that he can talk his way past the guards while you hide in the back in case they recognize you.
Turns out Sean knows the universal language of free booze.
Hamish Gray is so thankful, he offers to take you to the drop off location.
Once you arrive, Sean and Hamish get off and start to unload. While Sean distracts Hamish, Arthur can climb down from his hiding space and get in position
- GOLD MEDAL: Silently kill the Gray Sean distracts in the wagon store
Come up behind the guard and choke him out.
You’ll drag the guard inside while Sean closes the door. Sean makes a number of fire bottles for you to top up your supply, which will make lighting the gigantic bottle of moonshine on your very flammable shoulders quite easy. Follow Sean out of the barn and get into hiding as another wagon pulls up. You overhead the driver talking to a guard, and find out that the wagon is carrying payroll. Looks like you just got a secondary target.
Douse the Tobacco Fields With Moonshine
- GOLD MEDAL: Douse the fields within 2 minutes 20 seconds
- GOLD MEDAL: Complete the mission without taking any health items
As the wagon rolls away, Sean silently takes out the guard. As soon as this happens, the timer starts.
Crouch and move past him into the fields which will now show up on your radar with yellow target areas while they’re on the minimap, and a yellow circle with an x indicating the direction to the field when they’re out of your map range. Go to each area in turn and pour the moonshine as you walk. The yellow target area will slowly fade as you pour and disappear when enough of the plants in each area have been covered. Move to the next yellow area and continue to pour.
There are a total of seven areas that need to be doused. Watch out for guards patrolling the paths between the fields, so be sure to stay crouched and move only when the coast is clear.
While you pour the moonshine, keep moving towards the next field so that you can quickly move from one to the next.
When all are covered, meet Sean at the barn. He’ll direct you to toss a fire bottle into the barn to start with.
Next, toss fire bottles in the field inside the yellow target areas until they disappear.
Take Out the Gray’s Guards
Meet back up with Sean and follow him across the fields taking out guards until you can get to the horses. Take it slow so that you don’t take excessive damage. Remember that you still cannot use health items due to the gold medal requirements.
Sean is of course looking for specific horses, namely those that were attached to the payroll wagon.
He will lead you through the pathways in the middle of the flaming crops, with visibility extremely low. Watch for enemies to suddenly appear, and keep to cover as much as you can.
When you finally find the payroll wagon, Sean will look for the money while you cut the horses free of their harnesses.
When Sean leaps to the first horse, get on the other horse and follow him out of the blaze.
Escape with Sean
- GOLD MEDAL: Kill 5 Grays during the escape
The last gold medal requirement is a tough one with the low visibility. Try to use Dead Eye as much as possible so that you can instant kill headshots before Sean takes out all the guards along the way. The margin for error is small, and Sean is frustratingly effective at killing during this section.
You must rack up five kills before you escape the camp and have this talk with Sean.
You will then have your choice of going your separate ways or automatically riding back to camp with Sean.

Is there any way to switch back to auto dead eye? Cause this last challenge. Sean just insta kills him as soon as he gets in range. I feel auto dead eye would be better in this situation.
PoisonJam says
Nope. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.

I found a decent method to kill those 5 at the end. Instead of waiting for Sean to get on his horse and for you to follow him, just as Sean jumps onto the seat of the wagon, speed through the fields that are mostly on fire, trying to avoid any flames or obstacles along the way. If you do this right, you’ll be in front of Sean giving you decent amount of time to kill the first 3 dudes. The last two aren’t so hard to kill with Sean in front.

I just ran off before he gets done unloading. Of course the first time I got too far ahead and “abandoned him” (with his one-shot-kill aiming I think he’ll be fine alone) so I had to start over. But it does work, you just gotta balance being far enough ahead to get the shot with getting too far ahead and failing. I used the semi-auto shotgun with explosive shells to guarantee a one-shot-kill.

To take out the 5 last Braithwaites, don’t wait for Sean to loot the payroll. Just take off ahead of him and kill the five. He will eventually catch up. I had to do this 3 times to get the gold due to the last part and Sean’s ridiculous aim.
Amer says
Your idea is not working.
Oldmanjenkins says
The “run in front of Sean” method works if you time it right. I used the semi-auto shotgun with explosive shells to get one-hit-kills, but the first time I tried I abandoned Sean and obviously that fails the gold medal requirement. As long as you just get a little bit ahead of him and know the path to take, you’re okay. I practiced a few times by abandoning the mission with the left d-pad menu and retrying the checkpoint. Even with the risk of abandoning Sean (who can one-shot everyone that gets close to him, so I’m not sure he needs my protection) it’s the best way to go.
