In Red Dead Redemption 2 when you commit a crime with witnesses, the lawmen (police) will come to investigate the area.
How to Lose the Police
At this point you have different options to escape them, based on how far into the chase you are:
- If the area is under investigation but lawmen have not yet arrived, simply escape the area that is marked with a red circle.
- If you have been tracked in the wilderness, 3 waves of lawmen will come on horseback to hunt you down. Killing all 3 waves will stop them from spawning. You can camp behind cover and kill them as they approach.
- If you cause crimes in a town it’s more tricky to escape as there are more people and police chasing after you. Your best bet is to ride over to another region (there are 5 in total as outlined on the world map). Your pursuers will stop chasing you in other regions.
Regardless, a bounty will remain on your head for your crimes. So to avoid trouble with the law permanently, you must remove the bounty. If you committed too many murders in a town it can come under lockdown, meaning the shops all get closed for a while. The lockdown will go away after a few in-game days but the bounty remains permanently until paid off.
How to Lose your Bounty
The only reliable option is to pay off your bounty at a post office. The more crimes you committed, the higher the bounty will be (you can also see it on the map in red color when scrolling over a district). Post offices are marked with the icon and can be found in every major town (marked on map). Just walk up to the clerk and choose to pay off your bounty.
