In Starfield there is a known bug that causes the game to crash or freeze every time the player makes a manual save.
This happens when there are too many different Manual Save Slots. Since the game doesn’t have a hardcoded limit on how many saves can be made, some players will save in a different slot every time and eventually the game will overload and can’t handle the large amount of saves anymore.
The issue starts at about 400 Manual Save Slots on both Xbox and PC.
How to Fix
Simply delete the Manual Saves. If the game is still responsive you can go into the save game menu and click “Delete” on each save.
If the game freezes as soon as you click any save, there is only one solution:
- On PC: Manually delete local saves. Go to Local Disk (C:) / Users / Your Username / Documents / My Games / Starfield / Saves. Be sure to copy & paste these into another folder as a backup. Then delete all files named “Save”. Keep the ones called “Autosave”, “Exitsave”, “Quicksave”. If you delete those you would lose your entire progress so be careful.
- On Xbox: Download the latest Cloud Backup before the issue started. Then the game should be responsive again so that you can manually delete the saves from the in-game save menu one by one. If your Cloud Backup already has too many saves and is unresponsive then you might be out of luck.
It’s perfectly fine to keep overwriting the same Manual Save Slots as often as you want, this can be thousands of times without issues. Just try to keep it below 300 individual Manual Save Slots and it should be fine.

I had no bug problems until this last update patch, now many are showing, including freeze when save. I have tried removing all manual saves (only had 10), and still freezing.

I’ve deleted all saved, made 1 new save and still game freezes when opening inventory/save.
