  20. Talk to Sam

Talk to Sam Coe

At the lodge, head over to the Greenhouse area and speak with Sam who is waiting for you with his daughter Cora.

Travel to Akila City

You need to make your way to Akila, located in the Cheyenne system. From now on Sam will be on your ship hanging out, but once you land he’ll be permanently in your party until you complete the rest of this main mission, so keep that in mind if you want to do other things in between.

Talk to Sam

When you land, head over and talk to Sam who is waiting on the edge of the landing area.

Go to the Galbank Vault

After he explains what’s going on, head into the city. You’ll be prompted about what’s going on by a guard as you enter, and this automatically starts the Freestar Collective mission Job Gone Wrong.

Complete “Job Gone Wrong”

You need to complete this quest to continue the main one, so head over and speak with Marshal Daniel Blake.

You’ll then need to help out with the robber situation going on. You have a couple of options here, the easiest being to speak with the robbers through the intercom and succeed at a Persuasion check to talk them down. If you do this successfully then you don’t need to fight them at all and get the best reward from the Marshal.

If you don’t succeed in the Persuasion check or decide not to try, you’ll have to deal with them a different way. The Marshall will offer you the key to the back door of the bank, allowing you to sneak in and take out the captors or ask to see the hostages up front.

After the situation is dealt with however you like and you’ve spoken with the Marshall, you can head back in the bank and down the stairs to the vault.

Search for the Maps

In the vault, Sam will give you the key to open the boxes. You need to find the one that contains the item “Note for Sam” and pick that up.

Talk to Sam

After picking up the note, head over and speak with Sam.

Talk to Jacob

You’ll need to talk to his father Jacob. Follow the objective farther into the town to reach the Coe Estate.

Talk to Sam

Jacob doesn’t want to give up the maps to Sam, so speak to Sam again to determine the next course of action. How you respond to him here doesn’t matter, all options in the next step are available to you.

Get the Maps

You have three options now for getting the maps from Jacob. The best option is to just persuade him through a Persuasion check. Doesn’t require going anywhere or messing around.

Your other two options are either to go back to the ship and get Cora and have her talk to Jacob, which Sam doesn’t like doing, or have him distract Jacob while you sneak into the room behind where he’s standing and steal them, which requires a bit more work and picking the lock on the door.

Whichever option you decide to go with, pick up Solomon’s Maps from the desk in the room.

Talk to Sam

Speak with Sam after picking up the map, then you’ll have the location of the Empty Nest marked that you’ll have to travel to.

Travel to the Empty Nest

The Empty Nest is a bit of a trek out into the desert, so make sure you’ve got your gear sorted before leaving the city.

Get the artifact

When you arrive, the area is full of Shaw Gang enemies, along with some automated turrets and robots. Deal with the ones outside however you like, then head inside the Empty Nest.

There are more enemies inside the cave. Deal with them and make sure to grab the key off one of the first couple so you can open the locked gate midway through, then make your way to the end of the area to find Artifact Chi.

Leave the hideout

You can then make your way back out of the cave.

Deal with Shaw

When you exit the cave you will be stopped by the Shaw of the Shaw Gang. Here you can talk your way out of confrontation either with Persuasion, bribery, or choosing to fight them.

(Optional) Kill the Ashta

After speaking with Shaw a number of Ashta will enter the area to attack you and any gang members. If you talked your way out of fighting Shaw you can help kill all the Ashta, then speak with Shaw again where they’ll give you a weapon and some ammo for helping out.

Return to the Lodge

Once you’re finished on Akila, head back to the Lodge.

Add the artifact

Interact with the pedestal to place the next part of the artifact.

Wait for Sam

Wait for Sam to finish speaking inside after adding the artifact piece.

Talk to Sam

You can then speak with Sam once more to complete this mission, and he’s now a permanent companion option.

This finishes The Empty Nest in Starfield.
