Payback is the 21st main quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance (KCD). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Payback Main Quest.
Payback triggers automatically after completing The Die is Cast Main Quest.
If you stored all your gear in a box before The Die is Cast you can now retrieve it. There’s a box in the room where this quest starts. If you didn’t store your gear before the last main quest you can get it back later when conquering the bandit camp.
Go to Captain Bernard / Ask for your equipment
Captain Bernard is standing right outside your chamber. When you leave you’ll run into him automatically, no way to miss it. He’ll give you the Pirkstein Armoury Key to get new gear.
(Optional) Go to the armoury for your kit
Regardless of whether or not you lost your gear in the previous quest, this is a free armor set to use or resell (it’s a decent one but not great). Head to the armoury. It’s on the ground floor of the lower Rattay castle. Enter the first door on the right side on the ground floor. There are two chests. The chest on the right side can be unlocked with the key. It will say “steal” on those items but don’t worry, nobody will complain when you pick them up.
Go to Talmberg to give news of the attack to Divish
This is a timed objective! If you wait too long you’ll get a game over screen. Head there without delay. Once you talk to Divish the siege will begin immediately and equipment can no longer be changed. Be sure to equip your desired gear before talking to Divish.
Immediately fast travel to Talmberg and talk to Divish. You have talked to him many times before in the story. He’s usually on the upper floor of Talmberg castle but is marked on the map anyway.
Talking to him starts the siege immediately so be sure to equip proper weapons/armor beforehand!
Break into the Camp
Simply follow your men and watch them break open the front gate with a battering ram.
Secure the Gate
Merciful trophy/achievement: If you’re on your no-kills run, you can simply let your allies kill ALL of the enemies in this quest. If you want to help out, use your fists / bare hands only (knocks enemies out but doesn’t kill them). Some of your allies have infinite health and cannot die.
You don’t have to do any fighting here if you don’t want to. Just hang back and watch your men kill all the enemies.
Advance across the burnt ground and secure it / Secure the first part of the scorched encampment
If you want, you can help out your soldiers a little bit now. To avoid killing anyone (for Merciful trophy/achievement) use your bare hands only. This will knock enemies out instead of killing them (a series of quick jabs to the head knocks them out fast). Make it across the battlefield. When you reach the other end the next objective triggers.
Also keep in mind this is a perfect opportunity to loot gear from corpses. Their chest armor can be resold for a lot of Groschen. You can also store loot with your horse to resell it later.
Secure the centre of the scorched encampment / Attack the top gate!
Just watch your soldiers defeat the enemies, or help them by knocking out some enemies with your bare fists.
Defeat the bandits once and for all
Same as in the last section, your soldiers should have no trouble defeating the enemies. You can again join in by hammering your bare fists in peoples’ faces to make things go a little faster.
(Optional) Get your things back
If you had anything in your inventory when the bandits captured you earlier, you can now get them all back! Go inside the main building on top of the hill (where you met the camp leader in the last quest). Inside you find a big chest to the left of the table. In it are your things.
Search the homestead
In the same room where you find the chest to get your things back (camp leader’s room), there’s a “Letter from Vranik” sitting on the table. Pick up the letter.
Take the letter to Sir Radzig
Walk over to Radzig with the letter you just found. It’ll automatically start a cutscene. After the cutscene the quest ends.
The concludes the Payback Main Quest. The next quest “Out of the Frying Pan” triggers automatically and there’s no break in between the two quests, so come prepared.
