The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has 4 Great Fairy Locations. They are found near Stables. Each of them has a Side Adventure that you must complete first to unlock the Great Fairy. Great Fairies allow you to upgrade Armor.
How to Unlock Great Fairies
First, you must do a little preparation work.
- Accept Side Adventure “Potential Princess Sightings!” from Lucky Clover Gazette in Hebra region. Afterward, talk to Pen (white bird guy) in front of the Gazette where the quest starts. He will then spawn at Stables with new Side Adventures. Here’s the Lucky Clover Gazette Location:
- Go to Woodland Stable and talk to Pen, complete his Side Adventure Serenade to a Great Fairy. This unlocks the first Fairy and marks all other 3 Fairies on the map. Here’s the Woodland Stable location:
- Now all Great Fairies get marked on the map. You must talk to the musicians (Violynne & Mastro) at the nearest stable to each Fairy to get the Side Adventures. Completing those Side Adventures unlocks the Fairies.

#2 – Great Fairy Mija

#3 – Great Fairy Kaysa
Near Outskirt Stable in Hyrule Field. Unlocked from Side Adventure: Serenade to Kaysa which starts by talking to the musicians at that same stable.
#4 – Great Fairy Cotera
Near Dueling Peaks Stable in West Necluda. Unlocked from Side Adventure: Serenade to Cotera which starts by talking to the musicians at that same stable.
What do Great Fairies Do?
You can upgrade Armor by talking to the Great Fairies and trading materials that are dropped by enemies. Only certain pieces from armor sets can be upgraded (usually from merchants and quest rewards). Some armor that comes from chests and isn’t part of a set can’t be upgraded. The first upgrade raises the defense from 3 to 5. You can upgrade a second time to get a bonus effect.
Unupgraded Armor will start out at 3 defense. You can wear 3 pieces which means 3 piece x 3 defense = 9 defense total. By upgrading each piece once you increase it to 3 pieces x 5 defense = 15 defense total (a 66% increase). This makes you take less damage from enemy attacks which is extremely useful to make combat easier.
