- Follow Surtr
- Approach the Spark of the World
- Return to the Mystic Gateway
- Travel to Tyr’s Temple in Midgard, when ready
Reach Surtr’s forge
At the start of this quest, you’ll be back in Muspelheim, heading through basically the same area as when you were here early as Atreus. Drop down from the platform where the Mystic Gateway is and you can make a short stop to the left for a Materials Chest containing 4 x Asgardian Ingot and 12 x Dwarven Steel, then head to Atreus and follow the path to the right.
In the first room that you enter, you’ll be attacked by some Wisps. Once they’re dealt with you can look through the hole in the wall to the right to kill a Raven, then loot the Legendary Chest. If you didn’t already have both parts, then this chest will reward you with half of the Yggdrasil Seed which allows you to go to the Crucible area (the combat arenas). If you did have both parts, then you’ll get 500 x Divine Ashes instead.
Burn through the nearby vines and continue to the next area to fight some enemies. This is one of the areas you were in earlier with Thor, so to get to Surtr forge you are now basically just backtracking down the cliffs, starting with shimmying on the wall behind the falling lava.
Keep following the path ahead, but keep watch on the right at the bottom of the hill for a weak spot that you can hit with Draupnir.
On the other side, you can find a Nornir Chest. One of the braziers is easy to light, while the other two require some maneuvering with Sigil arrows. For the first one, just look directly north above the chest to find it sitting on the cliff.
Head back to the left of where you destroyed the rock and you can see the next brazier in the distance where you can’t reach it. To light this one you need to set up Sigil arrows on the pillars so that you can grapple to the left. Remember that you can shoot the same spot up to 3 times to increase the size of the Sigil, so for this you can shoot three times each on the farther pillars, then only once on the closest to light the brazier.
Head back in front of the chest and look off the ledge towards the brazier you just lit to find the third. You obviously can’t reach this with your grapple, so you need to use the second one you lit. Basically repeat what you just did, but shoot on the third brazier, the pillar in the middle, then finally on the lit brazier, which will trigger the arrows and light the third brazier so you can loot the chest.
After looting the chest, continue along the path to the forge.
Flame Phantom
Like prior phantoms, this Flame Phantom cannot be hurt normally, so you must fill its stagger bar and then destroy its 3 pillars. To stagger it you must hit the runic orb at the center of the Phantom, and due to the nature of the boss the best way to do this is by throwing your Leviathan Axe or Draupnir Spear. Occasionally the runic orb will flash, and if you hit it while this is happening it will be stunned, allowing you to run in and attack it for more damage. The main thing to watch out for with this phantom is that one of the pillars is located in the corner of the area behind a spot you need to destroy with Draupnir, then the other two are off the cliff to the south. Once defeated, you obtain a Frozen Flame (Axe Upgrade) and Vindsvalr’s Windstorm (Spear Heavy Runic Attack).
To continue out of the area, crouch through the small hole in the east wall.
Interact with the pillar on the cliff to throw a zipline, then slide on down to the forge area.
Approach the ashen man
Walk up the steps ahead to approach the man at the forge. Note that you can hear a Raven in this area, but you’ll have to wait a bit before you can kill it.
Double Soul Eater
The man doesn’t want to talk, and instead, you will need to fight a pair of Soul Eaters. This is just like the fights with the Soul Eaters and Ancients previously, except there are two of them. As with previous fights, use range attacks on the core when it is exposed and throw the orbs it spits out to deal massive damage. Attack it with when it’s staggered. Once both Soul Eaters are defeated, deal with the Draugrs remaining in the area. When they’re both defeated make sure to pick up their dropped items to obtain a Chaos Flame (Blades Upgrade) the Boon of Fury (Amulet Enchantment).
Walk back up to the forge and try to speak with the man again. This time he’s a little more open to listening to you.
Follow Surtr
You’ll now need to follow Surtr further into the area. Before walking off this raised area, you can spot the Raven hiding up and to the left which you couldn’t aim at before now.
Surtr leads you into an underground area leading down. On the spiral ramp near the bottom, you can watch on the right side for a small area with a Materials Chest containing 3 x Petrified Bone and 12 x Dwarven Steel (this chest is a lot easier to see on the way back if you just want to leave it for now).
Follow the path ahead, then follow behind Surtr to the end of the platform.
Hrist and Mist
Hrist and Mist are Valkyries that you will fight together. They both share the same health bar, and you will need to deplete their health bar 3 times to defeat them. There will be a checkpoint between each health bar. In the first phase, Hrist will attack you while Mist will attack Atreus. Usually, you will only have to deal with one of them, as they will typically focus on you and Atreus separately. When in close range they will do a few melee attacks that can be easily dodged or blocked, as well as a shield strike block that you can use as a chance to stun them.
Once the first health bar is depleted, they will retreat and heal, then throw you off the ledge. Spam to get up and you’ll be introduced to a mechanic for this boss fight, where one of the Valkyries will grab Atreus. If they do this, be sure to quickly throw a Spear at them to free Atreus. They will now regularly retreat to the opposite side of the arena, where Mist will launch feathers at you, followed up by Hrist throwing an unblockable boulder. The feathers can easily be blocked, followed up by dodging the boulder. Mist will also start doing a spinning attack towards you, but that can be stopped with any attack. During this phase you can simply throw your Spear over and over when they are at range, as this will cancel Mist’s spin, stop them from grabbing Atreus, and deal damage while they throw feathers and boulders. They will also start doing a double attack where they will launch a boulder alongside one of the Valkyries, and they will also do a sweeping attack where they will sweep across the field. During this there will be obvious markers on the ground indicating where they will attack, so just avoid these zones.
After the second health bar, they will retreat once again for the final health bar. For phase 3 they will be mostly the same, using the attacks from phase 2, but with some more melee attacks that can easily be dodged or blocked. Once their final health bar is depleted, there will be a couple of QTEs to finish the fight. After they are defeated you obtain a Gale Flame (Spear Upgrade) and the trophy Better Together .
Approach the Spark of the World
Once they are defeated, follow Atreus back over to the edge of the platform where Surtr previously was.
Return to the Mystic Gateway
With the summoning complete, you now just need to return to the Mystic Gateway to make your final preparations. You’re now just backtracking all the way up basically the same path you took to reach Surtr, fighting groups of Einherjar along the way. To exit the forge area you climb up the wall to the west (as you obviously can’t climb up the zipline). The rest of the path back to the Mystic Gateway is the same and there are no new items to grab.
At the gateway, you’ll have to pick up Mimir, who was unceremoniously left hanging when his task was complete.
Travel to Tyr’s Temple in Midgard, when ready
This is basically now your “point of no return” warning. You can go around and complete any Favors or other side activities right now, then make your way to Tyr’s Temple when you’re ready to start the final story quest. Head to the east side to the same elevator you used earlier to take it up to the bridge.
At the top, you’ll speak with Freya and the other gathered characters, then follow her to the end of the area where you start the final story quest.
This finishes The Summoning in God of War Ragnarok.
